And what does that review have to do with the MXL603 or 991?

Nothin' really, 'cept the common brand name. Hence the FWIW subject.

Are you the Gerst someone mentioned in relation to the mic testing technique? Is there a link to that?

Thanks a heap!

Sorry Harvey.

I repeat: Is the MXL 991 a repackaged GC 603?

All:

I thank you for your replies, and I love this forum, but before everybody goes way off-topic (imagine that happening around here):

The MXL 991 is currently being sold as part of a MXL990 & 991 package deal.

Does anybody know if the Guitar Center MXL991 is the same mic as the 603?

Thanks,
Paj

P.S.: Please, H.G.---I tought that you'd be able to clear it up, if anybody could.

I had reported elsewhere that the 603 and the 991 were the same mic but now I have my doubts. I have the 991 and the freq. chart is entirely different than either the 600 or the 603. In fact, it is flatter across the board than either mic with a slight rise, but still flat, from 2K to 10K. It rises dramatically above this point.

So, it looks like we have a whole new animal here. I tried it out on acoustic before buying and it sounds excellent by the way.

I just checked again and the Freq Range is the same as the 600 (3Hz-20KHz the 603 is 20Hz to 25Hz) but it has a better S/N Ratio coming in at 80db vs the 600 at 74db. It also is heavier (more electronics) than the 600.

The 600 and the 603 are super cardiod and the 991 is just cardoid. The 991 has lower equivalent noise then the 603 but the same as the 600 at 18db.

The weight is the real giveaway. Either the capsule is heavier or there are more electronics going on in the 991. The 603 is 128g the 600 is 130g but the 991 is 220G, a significant jump. As the capsules appear the same as the other two I might speculate that the electronics are beefier. I don't have one of the others to rip apart and compare however.

Thanks! That's the ***t I was looking for! The personal experience/anecdote was really appreciated. I sometimes think my 603's are a tad hyped in the upper freqs, and at the GC price, the 991 seems worth a try (God, save me from this GAS. . .).

I like the "mass analysis" (but nearly doubling the mass suggests to me a different metal in the tube rather than more electronics).

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Paj,
Myself and others would like to know this as well and there's a very easy way to find out for sure: Call Marshall, ask to speak with Scott and he'll tell you anything you want to know. If you can't or don't want to call them, let me know and I'll call for you. Heck, I may just call them anyway because I've got a few other questions myself. If you call, let us know what he says.

Yeah, I just talked to Scott. He informed that 991 is a rebranded for GC 603. As Nat g. has suggested in our private conversation, another reason might be that this way they should not make a price match.

Did he explain the difference in weight? Looks like the same capsule but the mic is spec'd much heavier. Could be they made a mistake on the weight specification.
