Is the protools LE version a lot different from protools.

Does anyone know why there is a significant price difference between something like the delta 1010 and the digirack 02?

Will a powerbook, 1.5 Ghz...say with a digirack and protools run as well as a P4 3.0 Ghz processor w/ Hyperthreading and the Delta 1010 with Sonar?

Is protools really better than Sonar?

About $800 on zzsounds.com

Most people on here will tell you that when it comes to audio quality most software is the same. It’s all about how many bells and whistles you want. Most standard software comes with enough audio tracks to record (16-48) FX and the ability to mix.

Pro Tools is the industry standard, but that doesn’t mean it is the best or the only good choice.

My advice if you’re starting out is to also look at these two products

http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--PRSFIREPOD

Both come with Cubase LE which is pretty popular. It’s the basics (48 tracks, FX ) but IMO it’s better to start out with the bare bones stuff and get a handle on it and then upgrade then to spend a bundle and being overwhelmed by all the options.

It’s the same thing as learning to play guitar. Better to start out on a acoustic or electric with a clean / dirty channel than go out and buy a bunch or peddles and FX racks. Most people are too tempted to play around with the FX than to learn the basics. Unless you already know the basics.

Oh good God this is going to turn into a flame war....

Protools LE is CPU host based processing, Protools TDM uses it's own processing cards with the CPU kinda quarterbacking things. That makes TDM more powerful. With today's new processors, the difference has been reduced, but it's still there

Another big difference is that you can only get 32 audio tracks in LE, while TDM is limited only by your hardware.

Some plugins are only available as TDM plugs.

Certain other features are not available in LE.

That said, LE is still a very good system that'll do everything 90% of us would ever need. Whether it's better than Sonar I can't say because I've never used Sonar. The 002R is more because it is a hardware and software package. You pay for both.

Personally I would run PT on a AMD (Athlon64 3400+) equipped PC, and yes you will get comparable performance to a P4.

is a blue car better than a red car??

IT'S ALL BASED ON OPINION!

find out what needs you have for recording and find the tools that will help you accomplish what you want.

be nice

i thought the "newbie" forum was a place where you could ask any question without fear of answers like "is a blue car better than a red car" or "duh."

Don't be scured now. Ask away.

You're frightened by references to red and blue cars?
"Duh" scares you??

Bennychico was simply saying that Protools is one system to get sounds recorded into your computer and Sonar is another. "Better" is highly subjective. What's better for me (a blue car), might not be better for you (a red car, perhaps).

I was just making a joke (notice the big, grinning smilie), but as simple as it was, and as clear is I thought I made it, it still eluded you. In your case, you probably shouldn't be driving at all. :(

no, i'm not scared of "duh" or "cars." i'm saying people can get a little gunshy about asking questions that can help us all out when other non-newbies start making joking references, even in fun. i thought reshp1's answer was perfect. no sarchasm, just answer the question and move on. am i too sensitive? maybe. but when you ask a question like that and get 2 or 3 or 10 people who know everything firing jokes back at you, you feel like an idiot and are less likely to post in the future. you were a newbie once, too, and i'm hoping to make it out of that category someday by reading other peoples' posts. and i don't give a shit if the thread has been dead for a week. it's all important to someone. by the way, i am an expert driver.

I remember when I earned my stripes and made it to Junior Member. Back then they would beat you with paddles while you recited the Nyquist theory. (Sighhhhh) Seems like it was just yesterday.

I agree that some of the attitude in other forums should be checked at the door of the Newbies forum. I think you are reading into, or taking the quoted comments out of context.

The color car statement is a very valid response to the question, only to highlight that it is impossible to give a finite answer on questions that pertain to personal preference. People lose that perspective when talking about audio equipment.
The Duh joke was directed at the post about the red car, not at the original poster's question.

actually....i was being totally serious in my post.
the original poster asked 4 questions in a row that were all about "is this product better than this product?" these questions appear a lot in these forums and if you take a couple minutes to do a search, you'll find your answer in about about 10 different posts. these forums should generally be here as a last resort. Maybe you don't understand something about a product, or a micing technique....maybe you're torn between two similar condensers and need to ask someone's opinion on what they think of the two, maybe you don't understand the technical mumbo jumbo specs on a computer....but it was just apparent that he didn't research the items nor knew exactly what he wanted them for. so many times i've heard people want a program like Pro Tools simply because they heard it was THE program to have. Or that a Mac is the only TRUE computer for recording. I was pretty much telling him that he needs to do some more research on what his needs are and what each product can give him....or at least let us know what his needs are out of each product. I mean, just starting a thread and saying one sentence of "is a dynamic microphone better than a condenser?"...or "is a blue car better than a red car??"...is just asking for a flame war to begin. Because all you're going to get is 30 replies of "dynamics kick ass!!" and "condensers will KILL dynamics anyday"

So, let me get this straight- When you're a newbie, humor, which was not, in any possible interpretation, aimed at the original post, is off limits? Give me a break. Neither I nor Bennychico insulted or demeaned the original poster in any way. Bennychico's answer was a valid metaphor and I made a simple joke about it. If you, or the original poster- who, at this time, hasn't weighed in on whether he was put off by either response- took offense at those replies, I think you need some help, but not with setting up a home studio.

I didn't mean the "you shouldn't be driving comment literally, it was a subtle dig at ....oh, nevermind, if you didn't get the first joke, you're not going to get any others.

You know, if I thought for a second that I said something that could remotely be construed as insulting to the original poster, I'd apologize. You are just way off base here. Frankly, this forum is littered with posts that contain outright attacks on posters, it's beyond me why you chose something so innocuous to complain about.
