Metal dude
Same mic but mines is a CAD.
http://www.cadmics.com/global_audio_m37.htm

I was tracking some guitar and i heard this weird flutter type of sound, only when i palm mute some 5ths on the top low string. I checked the mic pre and was not close to over loading, tryed another pre -same thing (using a brand new cable). So i tryed a 57 and cranked the pre close to over loading- no noise.
I have been using the cad in my kick drum(w/ -10 pad on) for a couple of months, the website says the mic handles 143db spl. Possible my kick f'd my mic up?
How can i tell if my mic is half blown?

hurm. interesting... is that flutter happening at the source? have you tried using another detailed mic on the source and seeing if it appears again? i have been nailed with this issue, i switch mics and all of a sudden i think it is broken cause it reveals a problem at the source. mics pick up a lot of things that we cant hear at the source. i know some of my mics make a very slight squeek of drum hardware sound like the drums are filled with birds.

try some other loud sources and see if you have the same sort of problem.

did you use the mic on the inside of the bass drum? maybe the air blasts finally got to it?

did you talk to CAD? i sort of f-ed up my cad m300 mic, and it turns out they will send me a new capsule for only $75, which is pretty cheap all things considered... i bet the m37 capsule is even cheaper. but dont start replacing things till you figure out what the problem is.

the electronics on CAD mics is pretty complex as well. it could be a bad cap or something like that...

Dude, sounds like you blew your CAD...

(somebody had to say it).

seriously, go to www.cadmics.com. they have a contact, and they were really helpful to me (and pretty quick). It definitely sounds like you've isolated it to the mic.

I know this might sound crazy but have you tried a pop filter?

Pop filter, hmm, sounds weird , but ill give it a shot. Thanks.

Yup, that'll do it.

You shouldn't use a condenser on kick unless you've got a pop filter. The air blasts that are produced in there can damage a condenser's diaphragm over time.

How did it sound on kick, by the way? I've been thinking of trying that out . . . with pop filter, of course. :D

Good news is that, like most good manufacturers, CAD takes care of their customers very quickly and attentively from what I understand.

oh yea, CAD is a great company. you can expect an email response to a question in a day or two.

there was a guy over at the tape op board that had his e350 slip out of its shockmount during a session and they sent him a new one. pretty sweet.
