Is it worth moving to MAC ?...

No I wasn't intended to move to MAC ... Just was curious if it IS a better machine as that friend has claimed. Actually I record audio on aFosex M80 reel-to-reel machine ...

Guess your friend is crazy too- just like all of us who still prefer Macs over PC's. I'm also listening to a vinyl record through a 35 year-old tube stereo! Sure sounds good to my ears.

I'm having fun in the looney-bin.:D

Never bought a single CD over the last 5 years ... only vinyls of course...

But you know, I'm really starting to ask myself if it is really worth working analouge, when it's all have to be dumped to a 44Mhz/16bit disc finally ... what's the point if it's gonna be heard digital anyway ?

The only advantage you may have is that if some day a new type of media gonna be used as an alternative for CDs, you will be able to remaster your work in this future media ... Even if you record 88Mhz/24bit, there's always the chance that the next digital CD generation is gonna support something like double that. Than you can get into your studio and remaster your work again to the new type of media !

You can export your Pro Tool session and take it to any studio and they can work with it, take files from a PC app and theyll spit on you......

Huh. I've never had that happen ...

But I'm using PT on a PC. Is that not what you're referring to? It successfully transferred over into Mac-dom. Now, if you're using software the studio doesn't have -- this is probably more what the quote above refers to, right? -- you're stuck having them import your tracks as WAV files. If you have bits and pieces, it's tedious (and probably a waste of money and time) to have the engineer reconstruct your WAVs into respectable tracks in a PT session.

Now, If you have Pro Tools LE or Free (or TDM) at home on a PC and want to mix or otherwise import the session to a Mac PT session, just set up your session with "enforce PC/Mac compatibility" in the dialog box that pops up when you start a new session.

Even if you don't do this (I didn't for some stuff b/c it was on PT Free on a PC and that doesn't allow you the "enforcing" option), A PT engineer on Mac can import the sessions anyway ... at least my guy did it. It worked just fine ...

So I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think owning a PC precludes you from having PT compatibility. I don't think there's any "best" machine. Was more the case a few years ago, but with the apps choices now, not anymore. It seems cost-wise, though, PCs win out.

FWIW, 2 separate recording friends of mine (one's a pro) made the mistake of trying to use OS X for their PT rigs. Boy was that a mistake ... they both scurried back to some OS 9.something-or-other.

Hey... at least you're covered in that case. I know a lot of guys who would keep an analogue setup if they could afford it. :)

Don't be wrong ... AMD call thier 1.45GHz processor "XP 1700"
so this CPU unit actually equivalent to a P4 1.7 ... at least as for what AMD claims.

I have both, myPC is about a year and a half old, a PIII 866 with 284 MB RAM and about 60 gig of drive space, runnign Pro Tools LE off a Digi 001. In addition, I have a brand-new G4-933 with 256 MB RAM and a 60 gig hard drive, plus a new 100 Gig drive, running a Pro Tools TDM Mix Plus system. I still need to add at least another 512 MB of RAM to this computer.

Although I was totally blown away by Mac OS X when I first started using it about 2 weeks ago, it is extremely slow. Just about everything I do on my PC is faster, menus pop faster, etc. The Mac does display web pages faster. Also, when I run OS 9.2.2 (which Pro Tools runs under) the Mac is clearly faster. My point being, OS X is slower than a river of molasses. It is impressive and pretty though. I would think that there's not much the Mac can do that a nicely configured P4 or Athlon can't do. The major exception is Pro Tools TDM; for people like me who have a bunch of plugins for the Mac it's just not financially feasible to switch over to the PC version.

MICROSOFT SUCKS.

DAMN DAMN DAMN DAMN.

A couple of weeks ago my girlfriend bought a compaq laptop with XP that was completely unworkable. Sooooo slow...so we decided to reinstall the whole system this morning...after 3 crashes during install we finally had it installed. Now we try to import our mail in outlook express and gues what....it doesn't work. Looks like we lost all mail.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN PRODUCTS THAT ARE SO USER UNFRIENDLY LIKE THE MICROSOFT STUFF.

I hate it. It's completely unworkable. I know not much about it, but I work professionally on a daily base with computers. I design websites, graphic stuff, pro audio etc. Since I've been working with macintosh the only stuff that really really went wrong was the microsoft stuff. This really sucks bigtime.

"know not much about it" - probably the reason you had that many problems with the PC. You should have no problem operating the Outlook or installing Windows if you know what you're doing ... Installing Windows is not necesserily an easy process as many may think.

But if you feel it's much easier for you with MAC - keep on working with it !

BTW, the PC shouldn't have crashed unless you had problems with the hardware or correct drivers. I would suggest that you take the computer back to the shop to be checked out. XP should work fast on a decent PC. I run it on a P400 with 128 MB of RAM and it is definately not slow.

Mac users only defend their cute boxes with their life because they must find some way to defend all of the money they dished out on the thing. Macs are only worth it for Final Cut and Pro Tools IMHO.

And....Macs crash periodically as well although harcore Mac owners won't own up to it. I've locked one up just trying to drag my floppy into the trash!

XP home sucks IMO. Great interface, I can stare at it for hours(though through several reboots). BUT, it runs WAY TOO MANY USESLESS TASKS!!! And no one seems to have any idea of what does what to figure out which can be disabled.

I havn't used XP Pro, but 2k runs like butter. Smooth as silk. I know what's going on at all times. If something locks up, Windows will tell me and ask me if I want to end task. Even if it locks up beyond repair, CTRL ALT DELETE will bring up a box that allows me to shut down properly. The network tools are supreme, even though my DAW isn't on a network(but it's easy to disable those tasks). The controll panel offers excellent control(go figure). The one click thing is also great. The fades make it a semi-friendly environmend(though it pisses me off that they are a high priority task). So...

I guess you could say I'm in love with Windows 2000 Professional. Ultra stable and controllable environment, without the dough of a Mac.

How difficult should it be to backup mail? I mean following the instructions should do it normally.

Imagine my parents trying to reinstall windows on their computer. They would never get it to work.

I know not much about it, but I know that outlook has no normal backup feature for the mail, and when I save the folder the data is stored in, it's a freakin hell to get it back imported. In 98 I have done it several times, but it never worked the first time. It took me ages.

Now problem seems to be that the backupped folder is read only. So I deselect readonly. Save changes and guss what....read only. Deselect ...save changes....read only.

FRUCK MICROSOFT

On my Mac I have had only major problems with the microsoft stuff. 2 minutes ago I tried too look at their support side if i could find answers. Their page didn't work proper on a mac!!!!!!

I agree that Microsoft is definately not friendly with all to do with competitive technologies. They didn't include Java in their XP for example. MS-Office is not perfect and you can always use Eudora instaed if it's better for you. But all in all they produce great software !

PC used to be considered an unstable machine until Microsoft came with the Win 2K and XP. I never had any crash with non of them (yet...)

What money????? I didn't mention it did I. I'm just stating thatr I hate microsoft for being such UNuserFRIENDLY. I could really kill somebody right now. What a worthless peace of softwareprogramming.

I always had a mac. I even had an Apple // before I had my first mac. And now I have a G4, and I love how cool it looks and how easy it is to use. And it looks brighter than the PC and the PC has grey menus, which suck.

That being said, for me the most important thing on a computer is it's software, which gives the machine it's features and it's ease of use.

Macs were a clear choice 10 years ago, cause they were much easier to use than the PCs. Now it's not the case anymore. I think that macs are still easier than pc's, but by a small margin. And when OSX becomes a standard, you'll have to trash all of your mac knowledge cause it's Unix, not mac.

That's for the ease of use. Now for the features. It's clear than the pc will always have more features than the mac. Why? Because 90% of the programmers develop for pc. A computer is just as worth as its software. Think about the Gigasampler, and Acid. That's just in the music department. In the rest of the software the difference is much bigger.

The disadvantage is that if Windows breaks then you have to be Bill himself, and even then you don't have a clue of what's happening. But as I said, with OSX you'll have to be Linus Torvald.

I am very sad (I really am!) to say this, but I think that the PC may be a better choice these days. Apple is just one company, while PC developers are hundreds and it's easy for them to come with something new. I am pretty sure that it's even difficult for Apple to push Motorola into making new chips.

Again, I am pretty sad to admit this. Apple was a symbol that said that you could Think Different, and you didn't have to stand watching that stupid "c:>" crap. What does the hell mean, "c" is bigger than what ? But nowadays, everyone is turning into Linux, like they want to be geeks or something (I don't believe you'll ever impress girls with the ability to telnet a server: "hey look mamma, I am the root user!").

I really liked diversity, I hate the Wintel crap but now everyone is doing it... bring back my Commodore Amiga!!

I'm not talking about mac or PC, I'm talking about MICROSOFT.

I live in an appartment on the second floor, and am so angry I jumped down four times the last 5 minutes. I ran back up, jumped...ran back up...jumped....kicked all the elderly I ran into.....stepped on a cat and cursed everybody I passed
