I have the same situation, pisces7378, as I'm running a Mac-based DAW with a MOTU 828 and Alesis powered monitors. I had to reach around the back of each monitor and manually turn down the volumes each time I was about to track something. It was a real hassle.
The solution for me was this: Samson C-control http://www.google.com/froogle?q=samson+c-control.
This piece of gear is cheap, and also allows me to switch between multiple inputs and outputs. It has a headphone jack from other audio sources that may not be running through your MOTU. Mute, volume control, and a stereo->mono switch.
This gear is what you want.
