Is "Guitar Hero" Bad for Guitarists?

Gary Hoey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Hoey) - who is pals with Bucket Head, Steve Vai, etc. said that Ironically enough, him and his guitar playing buddies we're horrible at guitar hero.

Of course, that makes sense. The game and the real thing create certain neural pathways in the brain that are inconsistent with each other. If one learns, for example, "Sweet Child of Mine" on the game, before learning it on the guitar, it will take them longer to learn it on the guitar because they will have to un-learn the fingering patterns of the game.

Conversely, if one knows that Sweet Child of Mine is played around an E Dorian mode, they will encounter frustration when they try to play the game version because their fingers are pre-programmed to play it that way.

I don't know, I can play a guitar if I want, but in my video game time, I'd rather wreck cars or shoot North Koreans . . . I can't do that in real life . . . without increasing my insurance premiums . . . :o

Are we shooting North Koreans already on video games, good lord, I cant keep up with 'enemy of the month'. I guess thats how they get us acclimatized to the concept so that its not too much of a shock when bush attacks them

I would never presume someone that is amazing at guitar to be good at guitar hero...why would they? 6 strings with 22 frets compared to 5 colored buttons? However..i am good at both..so its all good haha.

Me too JP. My eldest and her friends thought they could really paste me at this game but they forget, I'm a product of the 80's...I was a gamer as a teen, if it's on a game system, I will eventually get good at it. One advantage a guitar player does have over the typical gamer with this game is finger coordination between fret hand and pick hand. I noticed with the kids I've watched that they don't get "alternate" type picking so when the difficulty level goes up, they all duff it big time. I know....it's kind of a kid thing but my work is seasonal so I have three months off in the winter to enjoy family life. One thing I enjoy doing is shutting up mouthy teens with this game.
