arguably, i guess you could say that.
the reason cool edit iis easier to use than, say sonar , is that it has way fewer features. if you want a quick program for basic mutitrack recording, a few effects, and a simple mixing interface, then cool edit is a great program. if you want to have extensive midi editing capabilities, softsynth support via rewire etc, then you would probably need something more.
i still use cool edit as a wave form editor. a great little program

There are other tools out there like Samplitude (or it's little brother Magix Audio Studio 2005), CUBASE, and it all depends on what you want to do.
If you are doing MIDI, then SONAR4, or HomeStudio, or REASON. REASON is probably the best for MIDI.
I personally did not like Cool Edit, but I also did not like Tracktion and some people loved it.
Obviously you are not a pro, otherwise you would already know the answer to your own question. However, don't be afraid to try something like Samplitude or something even cheaper that will do a great job for you for 1/20th of the cost of say SONAR4 Producer.

The Magix - is Magix music studio 2005 deLuxe (not Audio Studio).
Anyway, there is also Audacity for free in the meantime.

I guess you will have to try demo's. I think cool edit is the easyest, then i have had people tell me acid was easy then cool edit. Which it took me longer to figure out. I have tried alot of programs i came to the conclusion i like samplitude the best. But the easyest i have used is krystal and cool edit.

Sonic Foundry (now Sony) Vegas 5.0 has an extremely simple interface and has some great features and such. Check it out. I believe the demo is functional and available for download at www.sonicfoundry.com

Audition 1.5 does ReWire, and it's pretty much just an improved CEP.

Audition/Cool Edit does have its shortcomings (MIDI, ASIO, etc.), but it imo, it is the "easiest" (see: get more work done faster) to use simply because it was designed that way. Better.
