Is a Mixer a Preamp? Is a Preamp a Mixer?

I am just starting to learn about trying to do some recording on my computer. I don't understand the difference between a mixer and a preamp, and if they are one in the same. So, I am hoping someone can explain what these things do, and what would be something good to start with for less than $400 (maybe $500).

I think that my sound card is a Yamaha AC-XG WDM(??). If that seems right, is it any good?

A mixer and a pre amp are two different things.

A pre amp can however be built into a mixer.

The Mackie 1202VLZ pro, for instance, has XDR preamps built into the mixer.

You can also buy pre amps separately. I think the ART Tube type is separate.
