A guitar but not a Guitar !

I voted NO .... but I must confess that I always say a "bass guitar" when speaking about those low pitch sounding instruments.

The number of strings does not help to distinguish between the common guitar (electric or acoustic) and the bass (guitar): you may find an electric bass guitar with up to 7 strings while the common "guitar" features 6 strings (which in its turn exists in 6-, 7-, 11-, and 12- strings versions as far as I know !).

The difference in pitch is not relevant either to make a final distinction...

So why NO ??? Just because playing acoustic guitar or electric guitar is so different from playing a bass guitar !
They are 2 totally different instruments in their way of playing, in their sounding lines, in their roles in a band, ...

Sure it does not help !!!

So long guys,

i'd say the bass *is* a guitar, coz (we're talking electric basses here) the rudiments of playing are very similar...most bass beginners these days treat the bass like a guitar missing the first two strings..what beginners, check out players like rick danko of the band and john entwistle of the who, they've been playing lead guitar on their basses all the way.
that said, the bass *isn't* a guitar coz the functions of guitar and bass in a band are very different, and the whole musical theory behind the two instruments is poles apart, and a good lead guitarist doesn't always make a good bassist.
so...possibly :)

Very few guitars have only five strings, although certainly some do. I've seen many basses that have five strings however, and almost all banjos I've ever seen or heard of have five strings, and some have four strings, just like a bass.

Therefore, a bass is NOT a guitar. It's a banjo.

Uh...except without the tambourine thingy.

I have a Squier Fat-Strat & lemme tell ya, I turn the tone down & play, you wouldn't know if it's a bass or guitar. I've actually used it as a bass on a song. A bass is a guitar & my guitar can be a bass.

A good synthesizer can sound like you wouldn't know it isn't a reall bass. Some actually use them as a bass on songs.
A synth = a bass = a guitar.

;)

But seriously: I don't think that a bass = a guitar, simply because a good guitar player doesn't necessarily mean that he is a good bass player and vice versa.

(I'm a bassplayer)

> Only five?

Okay...good point. As an aside, what are we using for pickups on these fine units?

Don't know/Bartolini/Lane Poor. At least the latter two are custom-made (yeah, not only the basses, but the pickups too). Why'd you ask?
