Is a 50 watt Marshall loud enough?

I'll laugh in the face of ANY priest who owns an amp. doesn't matter what kind of amp. After all.. he's a PRIEST for Christ's sake.

I've could swear I've seen priests smoking cigarettes, and drinking whiskey.

You have-all they do is confess to themself and the sin is erased!!

yes but no inhaling and no swallowing, and only as a lesson to lesser mortals as to the dangers of such undisciplined activities

It'll be loud enough if it's a tube amp. and if it's not, possibly.

That will be a fine amp as long as it produces the sound you are looking for. Like I said before, none of those amps had much gain by todays standards. If you play classic rock or early metal, this will do the trick.

So would a boost pedal or something like that push it into more of a modern tone? Or do amps like this need to be modded to get that Z.Wylde type distortion?

Why would you buy a vintage amp to get a modern tone? It's more expensive and an ass-backwards way of doing it.

If you put an MXR distortion + in front of this amp, you would get something like a Randy Rhoads sound. (thin and scratchy)

Sorry I was refering to something like a jcm800 which I never really thought had a modern tone yet a bunch of heavy metal guys seem to really like this amp and get that hi gain tone out of it. I'm just curious because I really love the tone of my Vox but would like to push it a bit more.

Better question - why would you want a modern tone anyway? :D

Vintage tone with a modern twist is where it's at. (at least IMHO) A lot of bands nowdays all have that bland mesa triple rec sound, that wasn't all that great when it was original. But, I guess iffen' ya wanna sound cookie cutter.......

There were a lot of things that people did with the JCM800s. An overdrive pedal in front was pretty standard. Or a distortion pedal with the distortion turned all the way down and the level turned all the way up. There were some mods that gave you more gain. Compressors, RAT pedals, and just plain turning it up would get you more.

Depending on who you are talking about, they might not be playing with as much gain as it sounds like.
