I just got done doing some artwork for an album cover in exchange for ProTools Digi01....Now I need a machine to install it in.
I have a budget of around $800 to spend on the new computer. This machine will be used to record music and photoshop with. I will be getting an older monitor from my brother so i don't need to invest in that right now. I'm alittle in the dark on what is important to have in a computer as far as recording goes.
Any suggestions regarding packaged deals or possibly just building a machine would be appreciated greatly

Thanks- Shawn

heh...

im in the same boat. i need a new pc for recording and graph work. but im better off in the budget dipartment(2000 left, plus i have my soundcard and monitor)

goodluck man,

peace

you can build a very respectable bare bones puter for $400-$500 very easily- especially if you already have a monitor.

TigerDirect has this:

An AMD Athlon XP2200+ Processor, 512MB Ultra 512MB PC2700 DDR memory, XFX GeForce FX 5200 256MB DDR 8X AGP TV Out video card, 120GB hard drive and a 52x24x52 CD-RW drive are just the tip of the iceberg. All the extras are included as well—no need to buy a keyboard, mouse or a CPU fan!

The Soyo KT333 Dragon Ultra (Platinum) SocA motherboard comes with Three DDR 2.5V DIMM sockets that are able to support a maximum memory of 3GB. It also comes with five PCI slots and one Universal AGP Pro slot. This mainboard comes with a Sigma box which features a Smart Card reader, Compact Flash reader and two USB 2.0 ports.

$519.99, after rebate. Not a bad deal, and it follows Digidesign's compatibility requirements.

I don't know how prices are in the US, but if I were to buy a new computer today, I'd look for a P4 2.4C or 2.6C, Abit IC7 or IS7, Good RAM (Corsair, OCZ, Mushkin, Geil, etc) and Seagate HDD..

Do some research around hardware-sites and see for yourself.

looks like this is it

well after some thought i decided to go with this.

So you want to use a Digi001.
It's VERY simple.
Digidesign has a pretty comprehensive hardware compatibility list on its site. Use that as your starting point.

thanks for the link

already checked and everything is compatable.. just asking if there is anythign else i should take into account

I would sugguest making sure you are getting a name brand motherboard. A good mother board is like good recordings pre's and mics :D. If you don't have that you have nothing.

I quickly tried to google for xlx motherboards and I didn't find any well developed reviews. Like I said...I did it quick. Other than the motherboard issue, it sounds like a good deal.

I would look into that mobo first though.

I think you will much more hard disk space, so consider adding at least one more big drive.

Don't forget an OS. I don't think you are getting an OS with that system as it is.

Did you see the one I have for sale/trade ?

Look in the free ads for music / recording equipment.

humm, for your price range dell makes a fast p4 system, hopefully with os, eck! i can't believe i'm posting this being an overclocker since the 300a intel, i prefer amd products just because they clocked better than intel did a year ago, today they both clock well but i still feel there's more info on amd than intel on the web and new users need support imho, but intel's catching up pretty fast...

agreed, the main board is the heart of a system and should be brand name which you most likely will not get buying an oem system...

1800xp, epox 3 [extra] ide board, 2-w/d jb 7200/80g, winxp, killer system, does anything i ask, which is a lot at times :)

Dells are shit. You can get them cheap for a reason; they use cheap components.

For that price range, you'll be getting a nice cute tiny little hard drive, a crappy case, and onboard AGP.

Hey Shawn. There's a guy called Allen that has a very famous thread on the Digidesign forum, where he recommends many types of machine configs at different prices, and they are meant to work with the 001. The link is:

Check that, although I think that their entires BBS is out of order today.

Cheers, Andrés
