help me understand what is needed.
if i move up to a digital multitrack can anyone tell me what is needed to do this?
i want to be able to record my own music on 4 to 8 tracks(4 would be fine). i will not have access to a
computer. can a digital multitrack be mixed down to
a cassette or a cd recorder without use of a computer?
this is what i hope to have.

digital multitrack
good mics
mixer/pre amp
cr recorder
cassette recorder

thanks dan

Sounds like you're all set to go. You've got everything you need to start recording now! What type of digital multitracker do you have?

Yes, you can record to a CD recorder without the use of a computer. There are many good stand alone recorders that you can mix down to.

If you are looking for an 8 track recorder I would look at the Tascam 788, Korg D8, or Roland VS840GX. All of these have effects processors too. Korg also has a 12 track coming out soon too.

These recorders have preamps built-in and mixing capabilities so you may not need outboard preamps and a mixer to start recording. It's good to have those at some point, but you should focus on buying good monitors, microphones, and a CD recorder first.

Tell me what you want to record and I can suggest some good mics.

thanks, wide
my recording goes the whole 9 yards.
when my pals are around we may record all with mics.
fiddle, mandolin, harp, banjo, guitar. when i record my
own stuff it's mostly rythum machine(base and drums)
electric thru effects either direct or micing the amp.
some vocals on good nights. we do this stuff for pure
fun. you know, women in the kitchen, men in the basement. sorry ladies. my wife plays too, but not as
much as she used to. i was thinking about 57s or 58s
for mics. not to expensive but very good from what i
understand. i use cheap mics now and will upgrade
when i go digital. thanks for any feedback. any good
digital 4 tracks out there?

dan

p.s. is micing a word or what a cat does?

sorry twist

sorry twist,
i don't have the digital recorder yet. i am in the process
of researching this upgrade thru this site with the
feedback i get as well as reading all the stuff related
to digital recording. i still use analog 4 track and cassette. any reply from you experts is well taken.
i guess the digital multitracks are all 8 or more tracks.
if anyone knows of any 4 track digital recorders i am
all ears(thinking of cost). i got to get the cd recorder
also. i may be able to go on 1000.00 budget not
including mics. one thing i have noticed thru this research is that this digital stuff is starting to move
down in retails and less used. but what's the price of having fun.

thanks, dan

There are 3 digital 4 track machines that I know of. All are minidisk recorders. The Yamaha MD4, Tascam 564,and sony makes one too. If you search this forum, or the Tascam forum, you will find info on all of them. Also go to the manufacturers web sites.
