If you're so inclined, check out:

It's the user guide for David Josephson's Series 700 mikes. There is the minor detail that the mikes sell for $5200 mono and $7400 stereo. However, the user guide is interesting in its discussion of the simultaneous use of (nearly) coincident true omni and either single figure 8 or crossed figure 8 capsules. The mike gives separate outputs for each capsule, allowing the signals to be captured separately and leaving decisions about choice of mike pattern (and stereo perspective, if so equipped) to mix time.

This also opens up the possibility of creating new patterns by processing the separate signals differently, such as keeping mainly the smooth high end of the omni and the low end warmth of the figure-8, something not possible on a typical multi pattern mike or the standard mid/side configuration. I know I've read of folks on the list using multiple mikes in nearly the same location, but I think this guide helps understand in a more organized fashion what the benefits might be and how to exploit the possibilities to create both new and familiar sounds.

Even crazier, with the stereo version, you can recreate ANY mid/side perspective for that mike location (i.e., what direction appears to sound forward and what direction is to the side and how wide the M/S sound is) after the fact by changing the amount and the polarity of the two crossed stereo signals before mixing them (neglecting the high end rolloff of the omni capsule in the backward direction and the off-axis coloration of the figure-8 capsules). Those mix parameters could then be automated in a DAW to allow precisely modulated changes in width and depth or a smoothly (or not smoothly) rotating stereo perspective, for example.

If you don't have the $7400 laying around, you could come fairly close by rigging up any old stereo pair of crossed figure-8 mikes and a SDC omni in between in a nearly coincident array. A good mike bar would probably be a big help.

Just thought someone might find this interesting and wish to experiment. For me, it's yet another reason I may have to pick up a second AT 4050, again.

Cheers,

Otto

I've found these things sort of sink in if you can go along and do the mic set ups at the same time. I've saved it for a later date. :)

A good read. Thanks ofajen. Certainly food for thought.

Heh, lots of Xs, Ys, XYs, and wyes in there. :D
