Interesting Mic controversy

Well on another forum, at least one person has now got hold of each of these mics and started A/B'ing...........his initial reaction appears to be that they sound relatively alike.

Re Telefunkens past claims and/or future statements.........it would appear that some of their (marketing) claims were at least bordering on misleading (I'm attempting to be diplomatic here) and their initial reaction to this issue certainly didn't do them any favours. Obviously, they are going to be in major "damage control" mode, what remains to be seen is whether the content of any future "official" statements has some degree of credibility.

Over the last few years we have seen numerous examples of ambiquity by various companies to avoid mentioning the fact that they source from Asia and we have seen a few who blatantly lied. Rode got away with it for years until they had made enough money to eventually start manufacturing here in Australia. What amazes me about this current furore is that I find it almost impossible to believe that 1) Telefunkens management thought they could do this without someone taking them to task over it, and 2) that while the costs of "converting" an Apex to an M-16 on a one-off basis (including a wooden case) would be "relatively considerable", in a full production scenario, the costs of these variations would be close to irrelevant.

...Gearslutz.com has removed a lengthy thread in which a Tele spokesperson made a very wordy, but unconvincing case for the "cost/quality value" of it's mic as opposed to the OEM version...and now an "interview" that will shock the industry with the innovations about to be delivered by Tele...looks like a public relations storm is about to brew...should be interesting at the least...

Well... Since most home rec'ers didn't even know that Telefunken USA existed before any of this I doubt it's going to be that big of a deal in the end for this market segment. This too shall pass.

did yours cost a grand???

I am thinking for the cost of the apex i could get two and use as drum overheads...... after all of this you dont think its probably a good mic for the money?

I'll put it this way. a squire strat sucks but it sounds more like a standard strat than any les paul does...

Falken...my MA200 was one of the earlier prototypes assembled by Royer's team (built around an ADK A51 body and a special capsule supplied by ADK, for which I paid $500.)...
I have A/B'd against a Rode NTK, SP T3, ADK 51TC, MXL V77, MXL V69, ADK GT2, and an MXL 960 (all tube mics) and the Mojave is the first choice IMHO...of course at $999. I would be interested in comparing it to a Peluso or the Tele in question here...
No doubt, there will be reviews coming soon based on Royer's high profile in the Pro Mic arena...contact Mojave (email or phone) if you have questions...they are very responsive and helpful...often you can speak to David Royer himself...highly recommended!

I auditioned the Apex 460 (and did not buy it), but would recommend used MXL V77's for about the same price...I wasn't impressed by the Apex (very brittle high end response)...the V77 is much more balanced and natural sounding (same capsule and circuit design as ADK's 51TC which sells for twice the price!)...

OZ...Maybe, but the sudden interest (due to the Tele controversy) in the affordable APEX 460/NADY 1150 mics does affect this segment of the industry...and it's based on Tele's questionable choice for it's new mic, rather on the past merits of these OEM Chinese mics, which have gotten very mixed reviews at best...

thanks.

isn't it funny that everyone who owns the tele version says its great and everyone who has tried the apex says it sux?? maybe its the high price tag that makes the tele sound better. or maybe the wooden box.

i could find that mxl v77 anywhere. are they out of production? isn't mxl made by marshall?

FALKEN...out of production, but they show up regularly on Ebay for about $175-200...transformer based with a 6072 tube...probably the best bang for the buck tube mic out there (regardless of DJL's reknown love for Chinese mics)...

No, I'm not slamming Marshall/MXL... but even if I was slamming Marshall/MXL... what the hell would it have to do with SP/Alan Hyatt or Harvey Gerst? I'll tell you the answer... nothing, it would have nothing to do with SP/Alan Hyatt or Harvey Gerst.

well I have never heard an mxl mic but their amps seem to have gone down the drain in recent years....all of that solid state stuff. i cringe every time i hear a solid state marshall stack being played.

No relationship between Marshall Amps and Marshall/MXL Microphones...

It's not the same company.... MXL mics are made by a different company (Marshall Electronics).

Amps

Mics

And the Marshall JCM800 head is nice... so is the little JTM45 head... and the 1987XL head.

Am I missing something, or did Telefunken really drop a clanger here? Did they think no-one would notice that the mic was just an OEM kit with a paint-job?

I'm surprised that any company could be so crass. Surely there must be more to it than this.

you'd think. but hell, maby a real deal on a tube mic???

or do both of them suck???
