Hi! I posted a thread earlier "New Member". I would like to make contact with people who have Crown and Otari recorders. I also have Revox. Thanks.

Hi
I have a Otari MX-5050 B2 Im willing to sell. Its 1/4 inch 2 track but will play 4 track tapes as well. It comes with a rare "wedge style" cabinet and is in good shape. Im asking 350 for it.

Can an Otari MX-5050 B2 actually play back 4 track tapes?

Certain versions of the 5050 have a 4th head for playback of 1/4-track stereo tapes. IIRC there's a switch in the headcover to enable or disable it. It can't record in this format. I'd have to check if the B2 has this...

Seaplane Pilot,

I just picked up a 5050 BIII in fine shape. It's a beast!

And yes, it can play back pre-recorded 4-track tapes as well as older commercial 2-tracks.

Otari still sells the BIII ($5,300 new) and has parts for older models as well. From what I understand, it's one of the most serviceable brands along with Tascam and Studer/Revox.

Legend has it Nirvana's first album (Bleach) was recorded on the 8-track version of the 5050.
