Hello,

I am currently using a Tascam 488 tape, & i want to get a digital recorder. I have seen a few good deals on ebay, but these models did not come with the built in CD burner ( anyway the one s i was interested in). Seems on ebay, the models with burners go rather high priced, & where i live i can buy it at numerous music store for a few more dollars. So i am looking at the cheaper models without the burner. They seem to be the best deals.

Now my question. How to I get the recrdings to my PC? The model I was looking at said it had a scuzzy cable. I do not have a scuzzy card or a scuzzy burner. I have a newer Dell running XP.
A local tech told me that my setup would not have worked with that. A scuzzy card can run as high as $150. he said & I would need a scuzzy burner.

So I am lost, Can i just run into my Line input on the pc? Or, will this cause a loss?

TIA,
SJR

Digital recorder input to a PC varies by recorder model. Some have USB connections that make it very easy. Some have SCSI connections that are faster, but require SCSI at PC end. Some only connect via CD burn/read.

You can get SCSI PC cards for $50 up. You can also get SCSI/USB adaptors and connect the SCSI end directly to your PC USB bus.

Once on PC, you can do with it what you want and burn to CD with any tools you have.

I found that SCSI PCI cards go from $20 to $70 on ebay.

But I am not sure if your PC will know what to do when you hook up your Digital Recorder.

SCSI a bit before my time(LOL) so I am not sure how it will work with your set up.

I am pretty sure, that every digital recorder out there that has a SCSI interface, has it for connecting an external burner or harddisc. You can not, I repeat : CAN NOT, connect a device like that (a scsi host) to a computer SCSI interface (another host). This will simply NOT work.
My guess is, that some of the units you've looked at are Tascam 788 or something similar. Your best bet is to find an external burner on eBay as well, if you go with these kind of models.
The other solution, the units that have USB connections may come in two flavors : The ones that can act as a USB host (don't know of any, but they might be there...) where you can connect a external harddisk or burner, just as you would using the SCSI mentioned before, and the ones (like the Korg D1200, which I have and love) which acts like a a USB-device, meaning that your computer will be host and can see the D1200 as an external harddisk.

Once again, DO NOT think that you can connect a Tascam 788 for example, directly to your computer via the SCSI...

You CAN, however, connect via the SPDIF, if your computer has this. That will give you no signal degradation (caused by A/D and D/A conversion), but then again... it will not be the EXACT wavefile that you have on the Tascam....

Hope I made at least a little bit of sense... :-)

Dime....

Are you planning on using your PC just to burn a CD? If so, i would say get the computer out of your studio and just get a stand-alone cd burner. You can hook to it via rca jacks and burn CDs right from your recorder.

As anciet as this thread is I feel running from 24 bit recorder and analoging out to an external CD recorder would be pretty cool, maybe it would retain some of the 24 bit signal quality yet without the aliasing(however you spell it). Could be wrong though.
