Man...............I just know I'm gonna regret saying this, Sigh......., but...... I hate this fighting thing. I come here because, for the most part, it is a place of peace and brotherhood among the musicians that lurk here. Since I've started coming here I've heard stuff I couldn't have heard anywhere else and better than that, I've gotten to take part in some musical adventures that couldn't have happened without this place. I've connected with people from around the world and consider myself friends with some of them....sam is one. What made those things possible is the open-minded and open-armed attitude that prevails around here and everyone would do well to remember that. It's much less fun for me when people are running around pissed off at each other for reasons that don't seem all that huge from the outside point of view.

Hey Sam. I skimmed the first page of replies, so forgive me if I sound repetitive.

As far as mix and musicianship - it's a professional job. I love the sound on the guitars, both rhythm and lead. Real real nice. Everything in the mix sits nicely.

The radio dial thing was a good idea. I remember Fastball did that on a song. I also remember in the opening of a TV show called "WKRP in Cincinnati" they did that... It flips by a news station where you hear, "The senator, while insisting he wasn't drunk, could not explain his nudity." chuckle.

When the radio comes back later in the song, I had just a bit of trouble hearing it. Perhaps the song had blasted my ears by that point and everything sounded quiet by contrast.

You had plenty of things going on in the mix to keep up listener interest, but at 4:34, I think it was slightly too long. Just a bit.

Overall though a real good job. Could be background music for Mission Imossible 14 or whatever number they're up to.

Man, gotta get me an ebow....Great guitar sound, Sam. The tune reminds me of Alice in Chains (a good thing) but very original. I'm partial to live drums, but appreciate neccessity. Plus, they're nice and full.

OK. Its streaming fine today. Yes, still sounds very well recorded. Dark, sinister, mysterious are the adjectives that come to mind. Its got your stylistic "stamp" all over it. How you hear these kinds of melodies and changes boggles my mind. Question for ya--is it the high guitar that uses the E-bow? That high one has a unique sound to it.

Sam--I swore I heard my phone ringing around 2:30! Really!

see..see.....see......I told ya I heard that....see seee..see . Now I know that Crawdad is as much a lunatic as everyone else is around here, hearing things....

it's that ebow thing....waaaaaay up there....and the phone rings....

Dude you have become a magnet for controversy. Must be that Long Island thing. :D

B Sab,

Well done indeed. I love the break at the end. This thread is huge so honestly I didnt read everything but it all sounds great. I really dig your stuff.

Guitar tone is killer.

What software do you use to record with?

Later

WATYF - it's cool.. I understand why you think the drums are off.. I have received enough feedback to know that they groove with the room to breathe.. thanks

participant - :D cool..

Alan McGuinness - thanks a lot for that great reply.. Black Sabbath has always been it for me... I got my first Sabbath album when I was in 4th grade.. My little friends were listening to the soundtrack from 'Grease,' and I had the first Sabbath album... I bought it in for show and tell.. I had older brothers who liked it, but by the time I was in 6th grade, they were asking me to copy cassettes for them... As soon as I heard those first words, "What is this, that stands before me," I was hooked, and it never wore off.. Between Bill Ward's great drumming, and Tony's guitar, Geezers awesome bass.. ahhh.. :D O.k. sorry for the rant.. I think I may be adding vocals to this eventually.. hopefully I'll get my own website going and I'll have high quality versions that can actually be listened to.. thanks man, I really appreciate the feedback..

Lt. Bob - :D we already spoke, so I'll just say, "hey bud!" :D

Triple M - thanks man.. you have been constantly tolerating my crap and commenting.. Yeah I know the radio thing has been done,, but i just had to.. i think if I add vocals it might not seem as long.. (ie: boring) :D thanks Trip!

Chuck U - cool to hear.. Yeah i hear the Alice thing too, especially with the long drawn out notes in the backround that are similar to something off 'Jar of Flies.' EBows rule! :D thanks for wasting some time man..

crawdad - actually the really high notes in the backround are a keyboard that I ran through a distortion pedal.. all the other solos are with the EBow.. I kinda blurred the lines a bit.. :D It is quite possible that you did hear a phone because I have noticed that my guitar pickups, pickup the phone sometimes.. :D thanks crawdad

mixmkr - no you did not hear a phone..

SluiCe - like flies to dog crap.. :)

sondriven - I don't use the computer to record.. I use a Tacam 788 portastudio.. It's easy to operate and it sounds decent (24bit 44.1) that is the biggest thing for a burnout like me.. ease of use.. Hopefully you'll check it out again after I add some vocals.. thanks for killing some time man..

What everyone else said!!!

Nice song, and recording. The musicianship in this place, is at it's highest, thanks to you and many others. Very inspiring!!

You have a great sound, now must listen again!!

GT

I can hear how the 24bit shines through now after giving your song a listen. Everything sounds just a little bit clearer to my ears.

Got a Q for your sam.

Do you mix down to your puter with analog outs or Digital ones?

GT - I agree about you and the others.. thanks man!

sondriven - yeah I did a 16 bit vs. 24 bit test for myself, and the differences were there no doubt.. I heard it takes a lot of CPU power to do that, so that's what's so great about the Tascam.. Also it's real easy to use. I am seriously computer challenged...

KKKramer - I don't mixdown to my computer at all.. I keep bouncing tracks with the 8 track Tascam.. Once I do the last bounce, I go out of the analog outs into a Tascam CD- RW5000 burner and burn a cd.. I then slap the cd into the computer and make an mp3 with music match.. The sound takes a beating I'm sure because I go through the analog outs, but it's the best way I found so far.. That's pretty much the extent of the computer involvement.. I have been thinking about getting some type of mastering software, I think it would help... but then I have to get something to run the mastering program on.. like Cubase, Cakewalk, and I really have very little patience when it comes to computers.. I had to buy the 'Windows XP for Dummies' book.. I'm still enjoying the funny little pictures! :D

As far as I'm concerned you've answered any question I had about 24 vs 16. I'm making the switch for my next recording, and I'll take it from there....

PLEASE DO NOT DEGRADE THIS INTO A 24 vs. 16 BIT WAR.

I am simply thanking Sam.

Now be nice.

I never have recorded at 24 bit. I have a Layla 20 bit, but I always just use the 16 bit choice in cooledit pro...which I use. shoot...I still use Win 95 too  I tried 98, but it kept crashing, so I took it off, rather than fool with it...even though it is supposed to be more stable than 95. But with 95, I NEVER crash.
Someday...with the new computer ...

Yeah.. when I did a test, it wasn't like night and day, and a friend of mine couldn't even tell the difference between the two.. but I heard little things.. mostly on the drums for some reason. If I was recording with my computer I would probably be content with 16 bit because of how much more CPU power it takes.. I also need all the help I can get since I'm going out the analogs when I burn.. My buddy has the whole Cubase set with the Ardvark 24/96 deal.. He was having a lot of problems and he has a newer computer.. I also heard a test with 24/44.1 and 24/96.. I could not tell the difference..

and mix, Windows XP sux! I could have been happy with 95 and a cable modem.. many, many bugs..

"GET THEM OFF OF ME!! BUGS!!"

Stop that KKKramer shit man! You're scaring me! My black girlfreind is gonna be pissed.:D

You pretty much record the way I do except you dont mixdown to the puter.Im outboard like you and the only thing I do on the puter is create Mp3's through MusicMatch......Im using the analog out's too......I need a digital soundcard and I can bypass all that analog bullshit.

Anybody know of a decent soundcard with a SPDIF/Toslink input ?

I think my Delta/Omni 66 has it. But I haven't had to do that. The Audigy Platinum does too I think, but you said "decent."

Thanks SLuiCe.

I looked around today and it seems the one that Fostex Recommends for my recorder(VF16) is the TerraTec EWS-88D ....$200.00 but it looks like it'll be worth it.Most digital soundcards have the spdif in/outs but they have them with a different jack than the Toslink that I need. The TerraTec has the toslink along with a lot of other in/outs and some good software.

Thanks for mentioning on those 2 cards though.;)

it keeps buffering..I cant hear the whole thing.
