What is "instrument level signal"?

What is supposed to go into the front of a guitar amp?

Actually what I'm wanting to do, is run from my mackie 808m, back into a guitar amp, but I can't find any specs on what the input of the guitar amp should be...

Can you go out from your Delta? I think that might be an option, if you can. Just turn the amp WAY down, and send the out. Slowly turn the amp up, and see. I think signals going into something like an amp are just much lower than into line level. If I run the out of my POD to an amp, it is much quieter than into my Delta.

Just keep everything low.....

Can you explain a little more about why you want to do that?

It's basically the "consumer" line level, -10dBV which is around 0.3V. Most passive instruments can generate about that level, a little higher if you whack 'em good.

Hey dogman, I was using that digitech pedal you gave me (the yellow one ) as a splitter between Sans GT2 to mackie PA, and the boss metalzone pedal to the crap...I mean crate. I noticed a huge improvement when I ran guitar straight to GT2 and then to the mackie PA.

I was just wanking around with the idea of eliminating the accursed metalzone by going sans GT2-mackie-crate... somehow.

This is what happens when you don't have a real amp.

+4dBu (1.3V) nominal, +20dBu (8V) max. Probably a little hot for a guitar amp, so if you get distortion, turn it down a bit. Do NOT connect the power amp outs to the guitar amp

Instrument level is what a passive guitar pickup generates, which IIRC can be as low as -60 dB. If you run line level (0 dB) into the front end of guitar amp, it won't hurt anything but it will distort. Turn down the output from the Mackie until it cleans up and you'll be fine.

It works better if you have an FX loop on your guitar amp. You run the Sansamp into a mixer channel run, the monitor out to the guitar amp FX return, and use the mixer's Aux Send knob as a volume control. That way you don't overdrive the guitar amp's input. I used to run this way at small gigs with my Digitech 2120 Preamp. It allowed me to have a really low stage volume and a nice beefy tone through the P.A.
