Installing an IDE drive in an FD-8

I have a blank 5.6GB IDE drive that appears to be working. I can connect it via USB to a PC and the drive works fine.

When installed in the FD-8, it isn't recognized on boot and the FD-8 apparently has no way to format a blank internal IDE drive??

I'm pretty sure I have the drive connected correctly as I have the service manual and have verified the cable connections. Also when the FD-8 is turned on, the IDE spins up and makes a few clicking noises like it is working.

Anyone here had success installing their own IDE drive in an FD-8?

It's been a while since I've had and FD8, but I thought you can format the drive when you go into the setup menu.

My FD-8 won't allow entry into the SETUP menu without a valid CurrentDr. It just hangs on boot with No Disk.

It seems like a Catch-22.

Ah.. ok. I remember now. You need to hook up a scsi drive and that will be the priority drive formated or not. Then you can format the ide drive.
