Hello All,
I am new here, and to recording in general. I am stuck with a couple problems maybe you guys can help me with.

1. I have a dell demention 2350 and i am planning on recording with Pro tools. From what i read in here recording Firewire to external hardrive is the way to go. I don't have a firewire port so i'll have to install one, which is ok...but what type of port? I plan on buying a 1tb external hardrive (MYBOOK) just for recording. OR.....Can i use just the USB to external hardrive with the same results?

2. I have been looking at all the Mbox's the Pro the Mini 1 input 2 inputs for instruments.......All i am looking to do, is Record me over backing tracks, and Voice overs scripts. Can someone tell me which MBOX i need to do that? I am not mixing 20-30 tracks or 10 differant instruments, just my voice and the background tracks.

3. With any of the Mbox's is the a way to set up a talk back system so i can talk threw a mic to the headphones to the person in the boothand they can talk back trhew theirs?

Sorry for so many questions, but i spent three days looking threw this forum but couldn't find these answers. Thank You for your time.

why not just install an additional internal drive? That will be way cheaper, faster, and more reliable.

You can use USB if the external drive supports it, which it probably does.. Firewire would be faster tho. USB is slower AND uses more cpu, so you'll be working your processor more, which means less tracks and plugins before it starts to bog down. Plus you can daisy chain as many devices as you want.. If you want a nice interface down the road you'll need fw anyway. I got an ADS Pyro fw card (has the TI chipset) for $25-30 online. Great card - 3 ports, zero issues with any hard drive, camera, interface, or any other device I ever had.

Thanks for replying.

I wont know if i have a open bay for an internal. Depending on which Mbox i get if it has usb or firewire. To my understanding the Mbox 2 mini doesn't have firewire (which is faster) but the Mbox 2 pro does. I just wanna record over backing tracks. So to choose which way to go USB or firewire depends on which Mbox i get right? Thats why i need help. If the mini will get me good recording to and extrenal hardrive i'll go with the mini, if the firewire is better then i guess i am going with the Mbox 2 pro. Thanks again

I see on the Dell site that Dimention 2350's don't have an extra drive bay. Odd since it's a frikkin TOWER case! So you'd have to fabricate some kind of mount, and get another IDE cable too.

Or spend $70 on a new case that would undoubtedly have extra drive bays.

Or get an external hard drive...

I was planning on the external hardrive. OWC Mercury elite for PC 1tb This way i can record right onto it. Would i be able to use a usb with this and the Mbox Mini? If so I will go with the Mini, Usb, And the Owc 1tb

I would NOT be considering using a USB drive for recording. USB is a) not that fast and more importantly b) a poor choice for streaming data.
