Installed New Sound Card Now What?

I'm trying to help my brother out, he installed a new sound card on his computer for recording purposes. Neither of us have a clue as what were supposed to do after that. He still has the original sound card that came with his computer installed. Now he has two sound cards. Where do we go from here?

I don't have the name of it at the moment. But I'm supposed to go over to my brothers house sometime soon to try and help him out. I'll be getting the name of the card and software that came along with it then.
