inserts as outs??????

im lookimng to buy a mixer with direct outs to connect to an interface, the interface will have pres hooked to it, and the direct outs from the mixer.
im pretty sure ive read on here that you can plug the trs in half way into an insert and you can use it as an out. am I understanding this correctly??
if so, should I buy a mixer with only inserts and use those for outs to the interface? or should I get a mixer with direct outs and inserts with the option to do more later once I learn more and am feeling frisky?

Inserts work fine for direct outs you may want to check this out about using TRS http://www.mackie.com/pdf/CMRefGuide/Anatomy_Ch2.pdf

You don't need to use a trs cable from the insert jack. The signal will be unballanced anyway so a TS cable (two connector) will work just as well.
