input to computer : line in, usb, or mic in

Hey guys

what is best for recording on a computer?

sometimes i hear line in is best, sometimes i hear usb is best, and sometimes i hear mic in is best

i'm really confused right now

i forgot to say

i know there is firewire too
but i just don't really have the money for firewire right now

The mic-in is the worst choice. It has a 30-cent preamp in it built for those $3 gaming stick mics.

Line-in is a little better, but the stock soundcard has 50-cents worth of chips and you'll have to have outboard preamps anyway.

USB and firewire are digital and completely rely on outboard soundcards/interfaces. Definitely the way to go.
