Info on "Blackface" ADAT's

Hey--
I'm a Newbie with a very low budget and one of my friends recommended I get a "Blackface" ADAT to go with my Analog mixer. What's the scoop on these machines? What are their capabilities? Some info on these ADAT's or links to a page that provides some are much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

The blackface adats are 16 bit, can handle 8 tracks of audio. Despite some of them having a few thousand hours on them , they seem to hold up pretty well. I don't own a blackface so I can't comment from experience. I do own an Alesis adat Xt and an adat Lx-20.
If your planning on shopping on ebay, you prob will be able to score an Lx, Xt or maybe even an Xt-20 for the same price as a blackface. It seems like the blackfaces are going for higher and higher rates on there everytime i check. Thats all the info i can give you, im sure there is someone who knows alot more. Well i know there is.
 
I have 2 blackface ADATs that are great machines.

For more info you can go to the Alesis website (alesis.com) and get into their download section where you can get a copy of the manual which has a lot of good info for beginners.

Just to comment on quality of Blackface...the reliablility is better than the LX machines, at least with the people I work with. The transport is a bit slower though.

Adat quality is quite good. It revolutionized recording about 10 years ago and still makes a huge impact today. Many gold albums have been recorded on old blackface adats. It probably won't be the weakest link in your chain....that and man I wish I ha one when I was 14. I was dealing with a cassette deck that had two mic inputs and I thought I ruled the world...and I am not that old. (1 year out of college)
