So I can at least know what I should be dreaming of having:D

Easy...

For me, hands down the AKG C12.

p.s. not to be confused with the C12VR which sounds nothing like an original C12.

I totally agree

I have zero experience with high end mics, but from my limited experience with cheap mics and from what I have read here and elsewhere, I think a lot is going to depend on the singer's voice and the acoustic environment/pre/chain. A mic that's great for one voice may not be so hot for another. But there probably are mics that do a good job for most voices most of the time.

And probably most important is knowledge. I'd bet that a great recordist can get a better product thru mediocre equipment than a mediocre recordist thru great equipment.

Sorry - I know this isn't an answer to your question. Maybe just sour grapes - I'll never have the bucks or the smarts to take advantage of a great vocal mic. :(

What Tom said... The AKG C-12 (the real one, not the reissue).

The Rode Classic is a nice R&B mic.

I like the Blue Kiwi as well.

Of course, I'd love to have a Stephen Paul modified U87.

Does that mean that Martin, Charlie and Emilio have been using it alot?

da-da dun! Tsshhhhh.

Hey Chess, then Denise Richards will be using it from now on too :D

Damn, Charlie is one lucky bastard; loosing your career, loosing your liver-functionality, loosing half of your braincells, and still gaining a Discrete Class A bitch like Denise....

Descreet, class-A, Transformer-balanced, all-tube, 0 harmonic distortion, variable-impedence, dual-channel deluxe where's-my-vaseline-and-kleenex-I'm-going-to-my-room-now-back-in-a-jiffee hottie.

DAMN STRAIGHT!

With the infamous words of Pops Williams from the Wayans Bros.:
"You know what I like in tha mornin'..... bam bam ...BAM!" :D

PS. You forgot to include: selectable variable mu/opto/vca compressor and 4 band parametric eq.... ;) oh, and 2 shiny big ass VU-meters. We all know how big Denise's "VU's" are...

That's okay Crazydoc, good input anyway.

Now, Speeddemon and Chessrock, you had me laughing, but you each owe me a mic opinion:D

Hmm... I haven't heard that many 'classic' mics, but from the ones I have heard, I really liked the Neumann U87 and the M147 .

The M147 does great wonders on guitar amps as well. Imagine this: nice 26 year old girl on guitar who actually can play the blues damn fine for a white chick (and even better than some black dudes as well  ;) (influenced by SRV and BB King)--->Gretsch White Falcon--->Vox AC30---->Neumann M147--: GLORY!

Best world-class vocal mics:

1. Neumann U-67 w/ Stephen Paul 0.6 micron diaphragm.

2. Neumann U-47/U-48 w/ Stephen Paul 3 micron diaphragm.

3. Telefunken ELA M 250/251

4. AKG C12

5. RCA or AEA 44BX or RCA 77DX

6. Shure SM-7 or SM-5

7. AKG 414 w/original C12 capsule

8. Neumann U-87

Wow. One of my mics made it on Harvey's top-10 regardless of price. That's almost as cool as Speed's new avatar. Between that, the Denise Richards talk, Speeds avatar, and the talk of all these other mics . . .

I'm going to have to, uh, excuse myself for a bit, okay? Now where did I put the kleenex?

Wow!!! My new vocal mic didn't make anybody's list. Did I just waste many thousands of dollars buying a Brauner VM-1 Klaus Heyne Edition? It sounds pretty good to my so-called ears...

Scott,
The Brauner VM-1 Klaus Heyne Edition mic is certainly one of the stellar mics available, but the question was about which were the best, proven vocal mics. The VM1 is still too new to have been proven as one of the great vocal mics, at least not so far. I'm sure that will change pretty soon. Leaving it off of my list wasn't a slight. I did consider it, but I haven't heard many vocals done with it yet.

harvey

just out of morbid curiosity, appx how much would one have to cough up to actually own either of those Stephen Paul modded Neumanns? Are we talking over $5000? Over $10,000? Should I be sitting down when you answer? Maybe take some Paxil first?
