In your opinion, what is the best, or was the best vocal mic? Regardless of cost

Used U-47s go for around $7500 and the 3 micron mod is around 3 (I think), so you're looking a little over $10,000 for the package.

The U-67 is arould $3,500 but the 0.6 micron mod will probably be around $5,000 or 6, so you're still right around $10k.

Maybe, after about 10,000 times, I'll start to believe it--if I don't hear one of those modded U-47's before that.

Too bad I'm stuck plugging mine in to all these "bad-load" pres that make it sound kinda' essy. I've learned how to use the de-esser like a champ, though. Still a great mic either way.

I already have it, but I haven't tried it.

For every mic of decent quality, there is a singer that fits it perfectly. I did a shootout myself with:

Brauner VM-1
Audio-Technica 4060
B.L.U.E Bottle
B.L.U.E Cactus
AKG C12VR
Soundelux U95s
DPA Large diaphgram mic
Neumann Um 57
CAD E-300

And guess what, most of them sounded pretty damned fantastic given the right singer....
I liked the sonics of U95s , Bottle and Vm-1, haven`t decided what to buy yet, one isn`t enough!

That's a good point. The all-time best vocal mic really isn't one mic at all. More like several different ones depending on the voice.

I agree, the SM7 does rock!
I like the RCA 77DX on smooth jazzy type vocals;
I like the SM7's on higher pitched male vocals;
I love the B.L.U.E. Mouse on male/female soft rock or folk vocals;
I've even found a vocalist that worked well with the MXL V63.
I just got an SP T3, but I haven't had a chance to really try it out yet.
I've even heard some really nice vocals done with the SM57, though it probably wouldn't be my first choice.
I don't really have a favorite out of any of those, just whichever one works best for the given vocals.

ozraves, thanks for the "hot tip" for a good price on the SM7.
The trick seems to be to get include the cost of a good mic pre!

FWIW, my Shure Beta 57 sounds better on my voice than my
Sennheiser 421 MKII even though it's less than half the price
new. For a couple other singers I've recorded though, the 421
worked better for them. The 421 works real well for background
vocals BTW, up to a trio, in order to have your lead vocal stand
out. Come to think of it, a "regular" '57 sounds better on me than
a 421 too...
