My guess is

PAN everything were you want it to sit in the mix,

then add EQ to your mix, and then

give everything any COMPRESSION that may be needed,

is this correct and/or did I leave any steps out that are needed in mixing?

1.) pan and volume

2.) eq or compression

3.) whichever one you didnt do in step 2 if needed

4.) reverb, delay and any weird stuff you might use

that is a VERY BASIC outline, certaintly not a list of commandments, eq and compression are more or less intechangeable, its just that eq and compression yeild different results when in a different order

because boosting and cutting on an eq affect dynamics and change dynamics affect eq balances

Oooooooooo....Le't not forget that delay and reverb can sound quite different when it is pre/post fader too because generally, pre fader aux sends are pre eq (although, this is not always the case!!! I am helping do a mod on a Allen and Heath GL3300 that came from the factory with the aux sends post eq..but luckily, there is a jumper that can switch this...).

Sometimes, a delay that is used for sublte effects that will stay on full time will "hide" better if is is used before compression because then it is responding based upon the volume difference. Post compression it will produce more audible delays.

Be creative! There are no rules. Kingston mentioned that eq and compression will behave differently based upon what order they are in the chain, and that is true. I have no hard and fast rules concerning that, just my experience and an expectation for what I want the track to sound like. Sometimes eq before compression produces the result I seek, sometimes compression before eq does. Same with pre/post effect sends. If you don't get what you want, try it the other way. It is really that simple. :)

 quasi-religious, abstract, gobbledygook....

Sound engineering isn't quite so full of mysticism....
