Ok, not totally recording related, but I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Background info:
I bought my boss a set of KRK active monitors for use with a DVD player at his vacation home. The problem is that the room is quite large, and it can be a chore for him to have to get up to adjust the volume on the speakers while he is undergoing his chemo therapy.

Is there anything that you guys know of that we can hook in-line between the DVD player and the monitors to let him use a remote control to adjust the volume? Or perhaps any modifications that can be done to the KRKs to allow use with a remote control? The simpler the better, since the speakers are in the British Virgin Islands right now, and I don't exactly have easy access to them.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yeah, we were trying to avoid anything that large. I was hoping for a simple gain attenuator or something, but looks like we're going to have to go that route. I do appreciate the help.

It may seem silly, but the simplest thing might be a dvd player with a volume control. Then he could just use the remote to control volume.

The problem is that the pro audio solution for that is more expensive than your speakers and DVD player combined. The remote is the factor.

The only reasonably priced solution I can think of is to buy a used stereo receiver, run all your audio outputs into it, and then run its outputs to the KRK's. Most of the units I am looking at used on ebay may or may not have line-outs, so you might have to run your ouput from the headphone output jacks :D

At the very least, though, it has a remote! Overall search:

If you don't mind running a bunch of cable, someone makes a passive attanuator for just this purpose. (I saw an ad in Sound on Sound) But, you would have to run cable from the DVD to where he is sitting and back to the monitors. Of course, you can always put the monitors on end tables beside him.

The SM Pro Nano Patch or Patch 2 would do the volume thing nicely (and fairly cheaply), but it's not a "remote". You'd have to run balanced cables back and forth to wherever he sits.

I think the cheap receiver idea is probably best.
