iMacs?

Are apple iMacs good for recording? I was thinking of getting one like this:

2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
160GB Serial ATA drive
SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Keyboard & Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X - U.S. English
ATI Radeon X1600 128MB SDRAM
17-inch widescreen LCD
AirPort Extreme
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

Is it worth an extra $120 for 2.16GHz? If I did get this computer I would just use Garageband at first and then work my way up to more advanced software. Where would I plug in the mics to record to the computer? Thanks for the help.
 
Apple's iMacs are great for recording, but you could get a Macbook and have essentially the same computer. I was thinking about getting an iMac myself. I am using a Mac Mini right now, and it is incredible. I am going to purchase a new computer, and I am going to get the Macbook instead of the iMac. It's portable.
 
I don't think the boost to 2.16 is going to make any sort of noticeable difference. However, others might disagree I suppose.

Probably invest the 120 elsewhere, perhaps put it into better recording software, or toward an interface for the computer if you don't have one, as it won't do for long to just... record into the mic input on the soundcard?

That raises a good question, what sort of interface are you going into the computer with?

the only issue i have with my Imac is that there is no support of PCI cards. My mistake for buying it and not holding out for a G5, but it limits my use of certain interface systems.
 
if you go with an imac, you will need either a usb interface, or a firewire interface. i would recommend the digidesign mbox 2 mini. it is around $300, and it comes with protools le software.

no it's not that much difference. nothing noticeable. I would just oc it to 2.16 if i wanted the 166mhz...
 
I have to record drums so I need to be able to use at least 4 mics at a time. Plus I need at least one XLR mic input just incase I ever need it.
 
The links I posted above will let you do that :) And since when can someone get a 16 channel console for $400, with firewire all the more! Check them out.

So would I attatch the MultiMix to the computer and then record right onto Garageband? Do iMacs have firewire ports?

Ok so this is the list of things I'll be getting:
iMac
Alesis Multimix 16 Firewire
2 KRK RP5 monitors
mics
stands

Is that all I would need to start off? Thanks for all the help everyone.
 
Yes Imacs have firewire ports. The Alesis will act as your soundcard, and all channels will be individually (yet simultaneously) transferred into Garage Band.
