Got a matched pair of H8K small dia condensers to try as overheads.
I haven't used many condensers and I want to know if I'm listening for the right things to judge them.
The thing I noticed is a lack of low end.
I've read that the overheads are the main sound for the kit. Many of the SDC's i've seen all have a rolloff in the low freq. Usually starting around 200hz. Because of this, my toms sound thin. I need to bring up the tom mics or low shelf eq boost for some body. Also, if I use them to mic say, a choir, piano, acoustic guitar, etc. will this lack of low end hurt the recordings?
Is this normal for overheads (SDC's)?
The mics sound good (to me anyway) in the mid and upper freq. I finally have some crispness sound in my kit. Should I concern myself with the low end?
Just an afterthought. Does anyone have any clips of good sounding overheads to listen to. Just the overheads, un processed, to compare to?
