I worked at a place in 91 that did the fender bodys. It was junk poplar laminated with about 5 pieces glued together and holes filled with wood putty. I think these were for the american made strats-lol. So G&L went south also huh. It figures. Once the big money steps in and the master of puppets pulls the strings, even the boys in Metallica drop to their knees......Its all about profit and quality is secondary.....

I don't think there is anything wrong with Poplar as a tone wood. It's very light (not as light as Swamp Ash, but lighter than Alder) and gives a nice dark tone.

Basswood kicks Poplar's ass IMO for a darker tone. Poplar isn't a cheap wood (tone wise), but a five piece poplar with a laminate, yuck!

I've changed my mind about pu's. I want to get EMG HZ passive pickups, with active electronics. It will give me the sound of passive pickups, but quiet! I'm thinking hum single hum config. EMG has the cool tone shaping pots so I can go from hard rock to blues to jazz with the same guitar.

I was checking out EMG's website and they have some really cool stuff. I'm the kinda guy who likes a lot of cool looking switches and lots of features, so I figured EMG would be right up my alley. Plus, the wiring is so freakin simple! I don't even need a soldering iron!

Anybody know where I can get a price list for EMG HZ pickups? All I can find is the retail price for their active pickups.

I'd like to see if I can get em on ebay and I don't want to pay too much.

E-Bay beware!

I can't imagine how many people are getting ripped off right now. I was looking for a Fugi Gen Gakki MIJ Strat and had no luck finding a whole guitar. Everybody started bids too high for necks and bodies.

It amazed me how many people were trying to pawn off their el cheapo MIJ Strats as Fugi Gen Gakki made ones. It's even worse that people are paying $400 + for them.

Yeah, it seems that the word is out. Still, 4 or 500 dollars doesn't sound so bad. After all, you're talking about a pro level guitar here and one that will last you for the rest of your life.

I've seen new MIM Strats go for that price and we both know that the MIJs are a lot better guitar.

if you win the bid on e-bay, get the jap strat, and it sucks will they refund your money? Even if they do you're probably going to be out 50 bucks (shipping and restock "fee"). If that happens you already have 50 bucks invested and still no guitar.

there is no way that i would buy a guitar without playing it 1st. I have seen strats with made in japan on the back of the heel of the neck (60's reissue a coupole of months ago) go for less than 400 bucks in music stores to go the e-bay routes.
ebay is fine for alot of things...but ... a guitar is something you have to play before you know if its going to be right for you.

my 2 cents

I'd buy one of these off ebay because I'm sure about what I'd be getting. I've done a lot of research and I know these are very good guitars and I'm confident in my own ability to to repair anything that might be wrong with it.

As a matter of fact, I'm keeping a very close eye on another guitar on ebay eight now. I won't post a link because it's a more or less unknown brand name and I don't want to encourage any bidding competition.

Did you see this one? When I posted this, there was almost 5 hours to go and the bid was at $355.00.

MIJ Strat click here.

The auction is over. As you can see, the original neck has "Made in Japan" on the headstock.

I stumbled across a 2002 50's reissue MIJ Strat. Looked sweet but it was over $600.

I was in contact with a guy from Fender named Rob Schwarz and he told me that all the guitars that fender has made in Japan were from the Fugi Gen Gakki Factory.

He said "I'm not aware of any OTHER MIJ factory thats been used. As far as I know....dat's da one."

Oy vey. Atleast we still now how to tell the difference between the el cheapo's and the good ones from a pic.

I would love to get my hands on a new MIJ Strat, just to try it out. I'd like to see how those stack up to the late eighties MIJ Strats. On the new ones, they have the sticker at the heel.

Have you considered some of the other brand strat copy's? There are some very good ones out there.

Most either, A) play like ass B) have really ugly headstocks or C) sound like ass

So no.

Most do, you're right. But there are some very good ones and some of them are carbon copies of Fenders that were never imported to the US because of trademark infringement.

Could be a problem finding a used one, or one in that price range anyway.

Check your privite messages, I found one you might like on ebay.
