I'm in the process of getting a firewire recorder for my computer, what I need to know is, I have to get a firewire card installed inside my computer so that I can hook up the firewire comming in from the recorder to the one I install inside my computer, do I have this right? Does anybody have any sugestions on what firewire card I should get? Many thanks!!

Yes if your computer doesn't have a firewire port, you need to buy one.
Check the spec's on your audio interface - some can handle Firewire B, which is 800mbps as opposed to the standard Firewire A, which is only 400mbps... B is more expensive however...

EDIT - I guess if I read more closely, I would see that you said recorder, which recorder is it? or are you refereing to a soundcard?

So what's the purpose of using a firewire interface when you need to add on a PCI firewire card? Why not just go with a PCI card?

I'm guessing you're (PearlDrums) trying to hook up an external firewire audio device, something like a PreSonus Firepod?

Dr. Biscuits, right I'm hooking up an Onyx 1620 with firewire card, but neglected to check if my computer had firewire or even knew I had to have a firewire port installed inside my computer to connect to the incomming firewire from the Onyx. Like I said I'm new at this, but thanks for the info. Do you know how much one of these (ports I guess they're called) will cost? Thanks again.

so it sounds like you may have bought your equipment out of order... I'm pretty new to this myself but if you can you might want to just get a pci card... and can't you use your computer as the recorder? (the question is directed not so much to pearl as it is to the other not so new guys) but i might be so new that I'm just wrong... so yeah... pci is a little faster than firewire though isn't it?

If you can perform surgery on your computer you are money ahead buying a whole new motherboard with 1394 onboard. Cost is about the same and a whole more reliable IMO.

Creamyapples1 thanks for the link. And thanks to everybody for your help on this.

If you go to Newegg and search for "1394A" you'll turn up some more results of the older 1394 version for under 10 bucks. It probably won't run as fast as the "B" version, but if times are tough, that is a workable option I would think. Hope you get it all figured out, if not, we're always here to give you hell for it! :D
