I had to go to guitar center the other day to get some guitar strings ... and naturally, I couldnt just leave with guitar strings.. so I had to buy some more usless gear.
Well I've heard alot of people mumbling about DI'ing instruments instead of micing them.. well I never had an amp for my guitars or
bass.. so I always just recorded direct..
Ok so I bought a direct box...
Now I have this nifty little box in my chain that does... absolutly nothing?
It doenst change the sound, remove any noise or do anything remotly usful as far as I can tell.. Did I waste my money on this thing?

Here's the chain.. bass->directbox->preamp->compressor->mixer->computer


Is that cool, or ass backwards?

Also, I also plugged my guitar in through my rp100... Would that serve a purpose, because my ears cant tell the difference..

So it would be guitar->rp100->directbox->preamp->compressor->mixer->computer..

Just seems to me like a lot of shit that is only adding noise, and raping my wallet.

Yeah, demensia. Truth is, the DI you bought is probably about the same as the high-Z input of your Blue Tube, which is a built-in DI. What you have achieved is 3 channels, so for instance, you could send a direct line from a guitar or bass while simultaneously using the Presonus for mics. You don't want a preamp and a DI in the same signal chain. A DI is not an effects box, it's a specialized preamp. So you work in Framingham? Maybe we should hang sometime. You might like to see my studio up close.-Richie
 
dude , you have the signal chain from hell......you already have 2 sources of preamp-ing in the chain(mixer,bluetube).....the direct box will serve no purpose.....

DI's are pretty handy to have around and are never really a waste. You use a DI whenever you want to put an instrument level signal through a mic preamp or whenever you need to send an instrument or unbalanced line level signal more than 10-20'.

If your bass is in one room but the preamp is another than use the DI close to the bass and run a mic cable from the DI for the long run.

I also use DI's for hooking up my home theatre to my mixer which is about 20' away. The DI converts the stereo's unbalanced line level to balanced mic level with ground lift so the signal has less noise and no ground buzz.

If an other players come over you never when you will need an extra instrument input.

If you are getting a ground buzz or hum then insert the DI and use the ground lift.

DI Boxes are a good tool to have in any audio engineering tool box.
 
I bought a Behringer (gag me with a spoon) D.I. Box just to have one and I'm not disappointed even though I still don't feel like I've gotten my $35 out of it yet. :)

Someday.....

It's just a tool. LIke having no shitty screwdriver or ONE shitty screwdriver. It always is better to have one than none if you happen to want one.
 
Yeah. My tool's nothing special, but it sure beats not having one... :p
