Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Hi folks! Here's the next song that I'm working on for my album.

Illium - in the Regdar and the Fighters File Leaker

I've attached an early mix I did a year and a half or so ago for comparison. (the one labeled "sequenced drums")

Let me know what I can do to improve it. (Also, if you've read the book, let me know what it was about. I have no clue!)

I don't feel I can comment on your unique musical style, but my first impression is the vocal too distant... you have an interesting voice. (And apparently I have to "spread the rep"... which I can't do because whenever I try to spread it... I'm told I have to spread it)

BTW, following all the links to this in my clumsy way I first ended up on a live version of "teenage girlfriend". I thought to myself "I know this song" :)

Thanks, Tobe! Where do you know "Teenage Girlfriend" from?

So by too distant do you mean too much reverb? Too buried in the mix? Both?

Listend to the mp3...cool tune, love the lyrics and vocals.....interesting drums on this hear a repeating triplety thing thats pretty cool ... not sure I like the snare sound, that would be my nit on first listen, snare sounds a little flat/boxy maybe?

Thanks Queepy.
Yep, it's distinctly possible the snare's a bit boxy. I'll explore that some more this evening. Would that be the regular snare or the tripletty one? The former is Gerg's; the latter is randomized so is tough to change much.

Ok. Next mix is up.
I put some more EQ on the rhythm guitars so that they take up less spectrum space; then I turned them up.
Bumped the vox up a bit.
Added a smidge of reverb and a touch more compression to the snare.

Let me know what you think!

The most recent mix is pretty cool. The 2 sets of percussion confuse me a little.

Thanks, Ray. Yeah, the dual percussion thing can get weird. The randomized percussion is just so fun! (especially live)

the only thing I'll say is to keep that keyboard part on the the right that sounds like an Atari game. I thought that was cool. It wouldn't work for a lot of stuff, but for your stuff I like it.

Thanks, TripleM. Yep, no plans to get rid of the synths any time soon!

This song kicks ass. I love it. Catchy as hell. Grooves. LOVE the drums. Your vocal is right where I like it. It's on my car player now. That is all.

Two things I noticed.... drums/pecussion didn't seem to fit the tune. Something seems jerky and a more straight forward beat would appeal to me ( note I said for me) Also the drums/percussion were a bit too loud. Guitars could come up. Great vibe overall though; vocals sound very Geddy Lee-ish.

Thanks, Ido! I suppose we'll have to disagree on what the percussion is doing. I like the weird jerky thing here!

I'll look into turning the perc down and the guits up a bit though. I've been having some trouble getting guitars to be sufficiently loud without burying everything else.

I'm ok with having my voice compared to Geddy. :D

Hey VHS. Liked this one (but preferred Tomb Raider). I'm really liking the backing vocals on both songs. I don't know what to suggest mix-wise - sounds like one of your best efforts to me on that front - the vocals are pretty clear throughout, which has been a weakness for me in your past work.

Thanks, Jonny. Anything about the mix you liked better with Tomb Raider, or do you just think it was a better song?

Hey I like this. This was one of my more favorite tunes to drum to. I like how you did the drums. I think they sound cool. The whole mix is pretty good. Your vocals are much better than usual. This is gonna be a cool album. :)

Well, the only version of Tomb Raider I could listen to was Jimmy's, which is a bit slicker, IMHO. I think overall, I prefer the song, but this mix of Illium (I listened to v5) is the best mix of yours I've heard.

Yeah, Jimmy's mix was good. Weird to hear someone else do your own song so much better! :D

(I've started consolidating my preview tracks into one "File Leaker" link so that I don't have to keep track of what all I've posted to the forums. The downside is that the links I posted to Tomb Raider before now go to Illium. By next week, they'll probably be going to another song entirely!)
