I'll Tell You Something--New/old original

Thanks for that Burgundy. Yeah, swirl on those cymbals is crazy. It has to be a compression that's doing it. I'd have to say, the one thing I've been consistently pleased with on my songs lately is guitars.

Try bypassing each compressor that's in the chain on those cymbals (channel, bus, master) and figure out which one is causing the problem. Then try lengthening the release on that one to see if it solves. If it's a limiter without attack/release (like the one I normally use) you may have to kick it out or work with the dithering (if it has it)...

Thanks man. No limiter, it's got to be compression. I put a compressor across the drum bus, which I rarely do. I think that's my problem. I'll try your suggestion on the release time. I could just take the overheads off the bus and just compress the lower part of the kit.

Try reversing the phase on the overheads as well. It may not completely solve the problem, but it would be a good indicator if it lessened it...

Another nice mix Robus...I havent read the comments so forgive me if I repeat whats just been said (my boys bouncing on my knee as we're listening)

I can hear a couple of things that are personal taste I reckon and no fault of the mix, I think the snare is dull, prolly on purpose, but I think adding a little crack to make it pop would suit the track more.

The guitars are very nice, I love they jangly tone (Im a wordsmith lol), but I'd like them a ball hair up, they sit very well in the track, I love the whole stereo width of the track, it fills the soundfield like a pro recording.

The vox are fine too...you just have a unique delivery, again I could hear them on other styles and theyd sit quite nicely, they just stand out a bit when your track is so polished, but I dont hear a pitch issue so I wouldnt bother with an auto tuner...I do think theyre a little dull like the snare. its hard when your ears are nearly 50 years old to trust treble v bass but Im pretty sure a little bump in the high mids would help them

Really like the song. The drums seem a little lifeless, wonder if some fx could do the trick? Not judging of course, my drums came in a box heh

Bass sounds nice. The acoustic bit is great too. This might be my favorite song of the ones you've posted so far. Lots of nuance.

Thanks man. I think I'm just reaching the limits of what I can do with the EZDrummer samples. They sound nice enough in isolation but just lack impact in the compositions that I do. I will be moving to a different package at some point soon. Unlike Superior, the EZD samples are pre-processed, which limits what I can do with them.

The next song is going to be something totally different, more of a prog arrangement with lots of guitars! Should be finished soon.

i also hear the swishing on the cymbals. can't tell you where that's coming from...i use MIDI drums ;)

vocals sit nicely here, IMO. Your vocal chain is working for me. the solos are great...those right sided high bends are a great contrast to the left solo. very nice guitar fills. those are my favorite parts of your tunes...as well as the chorus melody here. nicely done Ray cymbals are my only critique

Thanks Taras. I used that vocal chain you suggested as a starting point. I'm having a hard time isolating those esses, though. Yeah, the swirl on those cymbals is epic! ;)

Maybe you should try collaborations with drummers....:)

i didn't hear exaggerated esses on my work phones. those usually pick them up pretty well. not that they aren't there, just..it wasn't an issue when i listened a bit ago. im no expert on vocal chains, you know, but glad you found something that's working...i mentioned before, try the de-esser in front of the compressors. with EQ before it, just to see how that fits. and play with the freq's, attack, and release of the de-esser.

reminds me a bit of an eric johnson tune in the beginning...

this is a better mix than the first one,
which i listened to last week,
and got caught up in a crap storm at work and never wrote the review...

i like the idea of the voices being doubled,
but i would automate the 2nd/3rd lead vox tracks out when they don't converge exactly right,
it's distracting and does not actually help.....
i always edit off tracks that are not actually adding anything,
or better yet,
mix them in and out in specific places, or phrases, or even single words..

the kick is a little hot compared to everything else...
there is nothing wrong with mixing into a compressor across your drum buss,
you just have to really know what you are doing and know you are getting the result you want....

whatever is the hottest thing going into the buss compressor, is what's going to drive it..
so,
if you have it set so that only the loudest things trigger it, it will pretty much leave everything else alone,
which is the job of a compressor in this instance.

separating the overheads from the drum buss is a good idea, i do it all the time.
