Not Just Anutha Brutha
.........................and you're at work, how do you keep from losing it once you get to your stoo-dee-o !!??

I've never been able to remember a melody without first playing on a guitar or something, so I bought a little mini-cassetee recorder last year that I try to carry around with me. If I get an idea, I hum it into that puppy.

I am lucky enough to have a guitar at work. I can record myself on the computer in my room (I put goldwave on it), and email it home in mp3 format. Lucky me.

Matty

Just sing it all day, may be somebody sings along. And when you have forgot the most of it? You can ask those people to sing it again!?!?!:p

i see many options....the top 2 are :

(drum roll)

always carry a pen and paper or better, a mini cassette recorder......

or

tell your boss "fuck you, im going record".......

Having a song in your head,,,,,,,, does not make you a musican.

But being a musican means you can have a song in your head.

Being a musican with a song in your head means to write it down or tape it. Just tape a part of the melody with a small mini recorder. Once you get to that thing you mentioned, youi can play it and if your head is like mine, you'll remember it. Carry extra batteries for your new mini-cassette recorder. Just having the thing in your breast pocket causes the batteries to go out much sooner than if you leave it in your car, in the parking lot, 9 floors down.

After many years of losing song ideas, I always carry a spiral notebook, my micro cassette recorder, or if I screw up and forget those I call my answering machine and dictate the lyrics or sing the melody for recovery when I get home.

Now that's hi-tech.

I'm gonna get a recorder for my lapel, a metronome in my watch and a synth on my belt buckle. My clothes will be my speakers.

Mannnnnnnn, ya'll was on point with the help!
Jammies always pop in my head when I'm bizzee at work and never after!!

Muchas Gracia's to you all!!

I've found lately.....

that they come to me while driving long distances.....so I use my cell phone to call my voice mail (on the cell)

Mini recorder- microcasstte or digital. Pretty cheap solution. Or avoid brain damaging drugs if at all possible, then you can remember them. :D

Or leave it on voice mail.

Hmmm...maybe there's money to be made here. The 1-800-save-tune Hotline. Enter your code, leave the melody, retrieve it later, we'll charge your card monthly.

...if I see ads for this in the next couple weeks I'm hunting all of you down...

badgas - A high-tech songwriter is my old co-writer, who has a portable recording unit the size of an old transistor radio (a little larger than a pack of cigarettes) that has a keyboard she can play a melody into, plus add a rhythm track and vocals. But, that's one of the perks of working for Sony/ATV and writing songs that get played on the radio.

I agree having a song in your head does not make you a musician, it makes you a songwriter.

Being a musician does not mean you can have a song in your head, it means you can play music with others or being a session musician. It helps if you are a musician but it isn't always true.....

If you have a song in your head......get out the tape recorder......unless you are gifted enough to break out the sheet music or rich enough to break out the newest palm pilot mini studio gadgetry.

if you work with computers.......

......like I do, I got a mic running to the PC under my desk. It comes in handy recording a wav of the melody to be mp3'd and e-mailed home later on. A shortcut icon to the recorder makes it just two clicks away from being forgotten. If I don't hum and digitise a whole symphony, I can also benefit from my network's daily backup to make sure I don't lose it!.....
oh..... and the mic's cool to get candid samples of your colleagues saying bad things about the boss too! :D

Just write on some notepad the basic beat pattern, you will figure out a way and the begining chords. Hopefully this will keep the rest in your remebering.....Maybe the song reminds you of a song already done..(its all been done) and write that down also....
Anymore I start from scratch. I have no idea what the song is going to be like when I start. I will program the drums after I get a basic pattern in my head and go from there to adding rhythm guitars, then I work on the chorus, change, etc, then the bass and then lyrics. Then I add the rest and if I like it I will then redo stuff, especially vocals, rework lyrics, etc.... I like to surprise myself.......

the little tape recorder is the best idea I reckon, works for me too....you can "hum" just about any melody, solo, sing, into it...I think thats enough not to lose it til you get home :)

I have to laugh.,. that is a funny.. cause having the cassette is handy to hum into!.. But whats making me laugh is that even sitting on my keyboard (korgx3). i can waddle away riffs and chord progressions and hum a melody.. but i always seem to forget to turn on the tascam to record the ideas.. or if i do rember to turn it on.. setting it up and getting back to the keyboard my ideas are all gone.... it has been leaving me in a rut lately!.. back few years ago.. ideas were poouring out of me left and right and i could sequence full songs.. but now i am like losing it.. i would have all these riff ideas but never fully complete them to fullsongs.. which is a bummer.. i think my creative flow is goin!.. :(

But i cant be like this tho.. cause i am in the middle of a couple projects .. one wiht a buddy of mine in michigan.. and another that i am working on the side.. like to work with someone new on that one! so i cant really be this totally out of ideas!

So really having a deck doesnt help me cause i never can make a full song out of them now hehe!.. i NEED TO GET back in the swing again! :o)
