Man, I was so enthralled by that C37 that I did not indeed notice. I guess the levels then were set by using the old ears rather than eyes, no?
One other thought... perhaps the folks at Studer preferred to avoid the distortion caused by hanging a meter across the output? They probably figured that the console would have metering of tracks going in during record, or you could hang a meter on there during tracking and then leave it off for playback to minimize distortion.
