we don't need rest!!
SM57, why does it "seem" 9 out of 10 engineers would NOT put a SM58 on a guitar cabinet, snare, etc?

I don't believe I have actually ever seen a SM58 on a snare, unless that was all that was available...no choices, etc. Pretty much the same on a Marshall stack.... usually the 57.

If you're out of 57's (or whatever your favorite amp mic is), I don't see any problem with putting a 58 on a speaker cabinet. But for me, the wind screen is too big to use the 58 on a snare because it's too easy to hit...

The 57 is more unidirectional and able to "shut out" other noises on the drums.
The 58 is less "directed" and more likely to pick up the other drums
And it just sounds different

Not sure how you attribute different pickup patterns to each one, since the components that would affect that characteristic are the same.

The 57 and 58 have the EXACT same capsule. The slight difference between them is primarily due to the casing and the proximity of capsule to the screen.

sooo.... I'm right then.... no one has the "cajones" to stick a 58 on a slant cabinet, if they have a 57 too, eh :p

(Think Mr. Mom)57, 58, whatever it takes. :D

I've often wondered this as well. You NEVER hear anyone mention the SM58 for recording, althought it's the SAME capsule. Could it just be that it's a little more pricy for the SM58 (retail)? Anyway...damn good question.

The wind screen makes it much less practical as a recording mic, ESPECIALLY considering that the 57 is actually cheaper.

The 58 is tailored much more to being a live vocal mic.

well...that's what everyone says... (meaning...I think we all already knew that, and I was offering discussing to take it one step further...) then there's Track Rat and his meaniless answers too :p

I'll bet that's all Bob Kuban had in his band!!!

I was given two 58's by a guy who was moving and needed to get rid of them...I use them in place of 57's since at the moment I don't have one (last one I had got stollen at a show I did w/ my old band). I don't notice any difference. The only thing is, for some things I like the diaphragm right up against the grill on little gritty blues cabs, so I take off the ball-end, in that case a 57 would be nice.

they are virtually the same mic. I do not see how a 58 would be louder. I take the ball end off mine when I record, except for vocals. The ball on the end actually does affect the sound some. It is a little louder without it, a little less muffled, at least to my ears

So, you've never seen 'This is Spinal Tap' have you. Go to Blockbuster, rent the movie (and watch it) then come back and talk to us.

This might have something to do with it.

my understanding was always that the pop filter was the major difference, and that a 57 uncapped with one of those cheapo foamy windscreens was a pretty decent overall solution.

any thoughts?
