I'd like some comments on this one!

Allright, here is my newest piece of music!
(My first post in the MP3 Mixing Clinic).

It is not totally finished, but I've decided to stay away from it for a while, because at this point my ears are all fed up, so I can't focus entirely. In a week or two it will probably sound different, so I can hear what I need to work on.

I'd appreciate comments and thought's!

The intention is I will have real orchestra and choir to record this song - and other pieces I am working on - instead of just beeing me sitting with digital instruments and a sequenser.

Sounds like the song is taken directly from a movie, like batman or something. And I mean this in a good way. It sounds really good! What program are you using and where does those orcestral sounds come from (what synth do you have?). I really don't have anything to complain about. With a live symphony orchestra it will sound awsome!

Yeah I thought about movie soundtracks as well. Edward Scissorhands (or most any Tim Burton movie for that matter) came to mind. Cool sounds.

I am very much inspired by movie soundtracks. I love that kind of music, as it can build up such strong emotions.

I am using nothing but Sonar 2.0 XL and a Korg Triton LE connected via an Audiophile 2496. I will get GigaStudio next week though, which I am really looking forward to.

I am happy to hear that you compare my music to the music in Tim Burtons movies. Danny Elfman, who is the composer of most music in his films, is one of my big heroes. The man's music is amazing!

Now that you mentioned the pop, I heard it too.
Not good. I don't even know where pop's like this comes from.

Awesome! I agree with the others about the Elfman-esque quality. Very nice.

Have you heard of Symphonic Strings? If not, it's an incredible sample library of string sounds and stuff for Gigasampler, and IMO it would be the perfect tool for this piece. 20 CD-ROMs (or 3 DVDs) for basically $1000 USD. The sound samples featured at the Sonic Implants site are amazing. If you're interested, I can post a link in a PM. (I'd post it here, but I don't want to come across as trying to spam. But I will say that the sounds make me want to buy a second pc strictly for Gigasampler. )

Beaverbiscuit is right: investing in these samples is much cheaper than paying an orchestra and a recording studio. I've heard them, and they sound awesome. I even believe they're used on some big ass movie soundtracks.

Anyway, you're good enough to 'take the dive', IMO. You just need better samples....

And I can't stop thinking of Elfman either. That's a compliment!

You're right, Pedullist, about the soundtracks thing. The first sample on that page I referred to is (quoting from the website) "A dramatic clip from John Nordstrom's score to 'Prince William' the movie, first airing Sunday, September 29, 2002 on ABC." Very impressive sounds, like I (and you) said.

$1000 is a bit over my budget at the moment. I am not sure what kind of strings I will get, but saving up for a good set of expensive samples is way better than buying a cheap collection, which I will eventually get tired of.

That is my dream, to be able to make a living out of this. Or atleast working with it, even if it takes a side income. "Take the dive"... It is not so easy. It is too much a question of contacts rather than musical skills, it seems. I really don't know where to start or where to begin.

When I have gotten Gigasampler I will do a makeover of basically all my recent work - so I can get the "sound" of them more equal, and put it up on a webpage to promote myself. But beside that - and spreading demo CD's - I don't really know what to do.

I'm starting to sound like a Symphonic Strings pusher , but just so you know there is a Mini version of the library for half the price. And they have a deal where you can upgrade to the full version later by simply paying the remaining $500. So if you could come up with $500 now, you'd have a slightly less robust strings library that you could eventually beef up later. Like I said, just food for thought, dude! Here's to your continued success writing good music.

very nice. the ambience off the timpani covered the fast attack on some of the instruments well enough to make them more natural sounding. The concert snare and the the high pitched voices were a bit too sparkling and stood out pretty strong with the fast attacks on the front ends, if you could lower the attack some and dip the decay just a tad they might seem a bit more analog. The room verb helped a lot. very impressive work with what your doing it with. yes, very impressive on this end.

Looks like the lite version comes with 7 CD-ROMs. If you upgrade later on, you return these 7 discs in exchange for the full 20 (or the DVDs).

Oh, I just noticed that the lite version is also available in a SoundFonts version, which is cool for anyone who has the LiveSynth dealy that you can use in Sonar. Since I have Sonar and plan on getting LiveSynth, maybe I'll go with the SoundFonts for now. Well, I mean when I get the money, which definitely isn't now.

Well, I browsed the web for some stringcollections, and ended up at the Garritan Orchestral Strings site (http://www.garritan.com/home.html). It's totally incredible! Just check out the Endorsements list and the demos. Totally amazing! I definatly think this will be it!

Just listening to the demo MP3's is a source to inspirations. I can't wait until I can play with those strings!

The bad part though is that with such amazing strings, I would like the rest of my sounds to be of the very same quality. Sure, my Triton LE sound terrific - but the acoustic sounds can't be compared to the quality of the Garritan Strings.

The timpani is something I am not too happy about myself. I would like to bring the drums forward some more, without success. I want them to really give you that 'oomph' when they build up and escalating in volume.

Yeah, I am aware of the snare. Actually, there is a snare on four more places, but mixed too low to be heard. I have been working so much with this song, so eventually I lost it. That's why I had to put it away for a while. About your comment on the choir. I haven't thought of that myself. Iäll have to listen to it later on.
