My band(VASQUEZ)have got a new zoom mrs1266 and done a spot of recording a song i wrote, if you could take the time to listen and criticise it i would be greatfull....don't hold back...*hides under table*

It's not totally finished i know, the second guitar is a little to low in the mix and the vocal is overly effected, i 'd like opinions on a piece of kit that can produce that kind of vocal sound but not sound over the top as i think this does.

the song is called THIS TOWN

http://www.vasquez.co.uk/vasquez_music.htm

Thanks

Not bad at all.

Two things that sprung to mind, given feel of the song: those guitars sound really nice - warm, clear and free from any nasty edges (not to mention very nicely executed); From what I can hear of him, vox sounds competent, but way too low in the mix. In fact, it sounds like the drummer and vocalist have had an argument with the guitar player(s). Meanwhile the bassist is staying well out of it completely (as they tend to do).

The snare (while pretty low in the mix) at least is crisply recorded and played, and alongside guitars being so tight does still give an otherwise bottomless sounding mix considerable momentum, i.e., with some bass and kick brought out more, this would be an irresistable foot tapper!

I enjoyed this, but know I'd enjoy it more....good effort.

Thanks Robin, great to see you gave it a good listen, really really appreciated,

ok so 'i'll bring up the bass and kick a little and lift the Vocals, i had a feeling they might have been to low, just i wasn't overly keen on the vocal effect, i need something that will rough up his voice but not over the top.

Thanks again Robin,

C'mon guys surely you can do better than that, pleeeeeaaassssee give it a listen, i really need more criticism....

cheers

Someone from the UK who records on a 1266? what a coincidence.

I'm at work at the mo' but I'll have a listen ce soir when I get home.

I'm new to recording myself tho so don't expect any useful comments :D, it'll be interesting to see results someone else has had using the Zoom.
I'm actually selling mine soon as I've just got a PC but it's been pretty good as an entry level unit (although my ability to use it leaves a lot to be desired!).

Hear some of my stuff here:

Recorded on a 1266, mainly acoustic guitar and vocals with a few other bits and bobs.

Cheers

Hi kevin, we play about with both PC and the Zoom, i actually recorded guitar with the PC then imported each seperate track into the zoom, PC is good for recording individual tracks, but i find the pre-set mastering effects alot quicker to use and quite effective for a home demo on the Zoom.

Plus, recording real drums is a doddle with the Zoom cos it records 6 channels simmultaneously keeping great flexibility, where's a pc you need a hefty soundcard and wallet to do the same.

I gave yours a listen mate, i love the floyd influence, can't miss it, i like it, i thought the acoustic was a little hard sounding though, did you use a condensor mic, they make a big difference. Nice one.

I hope you come back for a listen mate, not to many people seem to be bothered which i find really strange seeing this is a Home recording forum.....you'd think this was a place you'd get plenty of feedback.....:(

Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

I mic'd the guitar (and some vocals) on those recordings with a samson condensor which is a crappy sounding mic.

I have a MXL 603 (SDC) for acoustic guitar now which sounds much nicer.

I'm a bit disappointed that no ones given any feedback but I guess you can't force people. I'll probably give it a bump and then leave it.

Like I say I'll definitely have a listen to your stuff tonight.

Cheers

id say compress the vox a little extra.
They got buried ever so slightly from time ta time.

This mix as is right now....
Would sound fabulous on vinyl id bet.

Guitar sound is great. Vocals are good, turn him up. Would like to hear a little more kick too. Bass gets a little lost too. Actually really I think you could get away with just turning the guitars down a bit.

I think everyone said those things already but that's what I hear :)

Great stuff, I really like the song, it's got a lovely 'rolling' quality to it. A mate came in as it was playing and he just assumesd it was something out of my CD collection, what's more he liked it!

As pretty much everyone else has said the guitar sound is great, really rounded and listenable (you can tell I'm a pro with all these technical terms :D ).

Good work mate

cheers Kevin ,nice one mate, i'm pleased you and your mate liked it, on the whole i think i've had a few suprising reviews, i'd just like to thank everyone again for giving it a listen.

Thanks

i'm impressed.....

wiw i was ready for anything, but i really liked it. I cant really hear the drums tho, other than the snare...can barely hear the toms. I can barely pickout the bass player, too. It just needs more bass reinforcement all round, maybe? or the drums and bass guitar turned up.

yah, the vocals are a little over-effected, but trying to "hear thru" the vocals, the guy sounds like he has a decent voice. Tell him not to be so self-conscious and over effect the voice.

guitars sound great, and the whole piece sounds very polished, very professional. melody, lyrics, arrangement, you guys are gonna make money at this. You might wanna quit yer day jobs soon...lol

Yeah, this is a keeper. Agree with all that went before. It's the kick drum that's missing more than the bass guitar I think, for this genre. If you knocked the guitars back a couple of db you'd hear them just as much and they wouldn't drown the vocal.

I would like to hear a remix with more vox, and with a better bottom end.

This is the second UK track I've listened to here tonight - excellent :) :)

Great song, man. It reminded me of a lot of bands that I enjoy: Television, Sonic Youth, The Strokes, even a little bit of early My Bloody Valentine (good bending/tremolo bar work). Really catchy guitars, crisp drums. The lead vocal line could come up in the mix a bit, but I really like the harmonies and how they sit in the mix (especially around 1:20).

Excellent job.

P.S. What other gear did you use (guitars, amps, pedals, etc.)?

Wow, i can't believe the great reviews i've had, thanks guys your all too kind.

GuineaMcPig,

Hi mate, I used MIJ Tokai ES100 (335) guitar with pafs, Vox Ac15tbrx(blue speaker) and thats it, the only other FX are the mastering effects on the zoom, I put 3 mics on the amp, one in the back, one close up and another about 5' away and 5' up high.

Vocals where also recorded through the ac15 with gain, then mixed with a clean Di'd version. Drums mic'd with sm58's and a few cheap copies, bass was D.I'd.

Hope that helps, let me know if you need any other info..

Thanks again
