I'm a seven string player, so most of my opinions are about seven string guitars. I played and loved an Ibanez RG7421 seven string as my main guitar for five years. Pulled out the stock pickups and put some Dimarzios in there, and set it up nice and polished the frets. It played amazing, sounded great, I had no complaints except that I couldn't get the low B to intonate properly. I also didn't want to have a totally huge string for a low B so I was thinking an extended scale seven string would be nice.
But the only extended scale sevens I could find were very rare Ibanez RG7421XL's and Soloway Swans, which run about $2500. So I lived with it for a while.
Lo and behold, along comes the Schecter Blackjack series with two seven string models that both have an extended 26 1/2" scale. They also have mahogany bodies, set necks, tonepros bridges, grover tuners, and real Seymour Duncans, all stock for $600. I didn't even have that much, but I found a great deal on a 007 Blackjack seven string.
I A/B'ed it with my Ibanez, and while the Ibanez was a bit easier to play (can't beat a Wizard neck for that) the Schecter totally and utterly stomped the Ibanez in tone. And even though the Schecter's neck is bit more substantial, I had been finding that my hand would tend to cramp a bit when playing the Ibanez for long periods of time, and that the Schecter neck filled up my hand better and felt more comfortable.
I should also say that the quality, setup and fit and finish of my Korean made Blackjack was easily better than my Japanese made Ibanez. Plus with Ibanez you pretty much always have to upgrade the pickups unless you get the expensive models. Many Schecters come stock with Duncans or EMG's for less than $700.
I sold the Ibanez to pay off the Schecter. It's my favorite guitar I've ever owned.
I think both Ibanez and Schecter make some nice guitars, but the Schecters seem to be better bang for the buck in my opinion. They're my new personal favorite brand of guitars, and they really seem to be offering what a lot of guitarists want. I loved my Ibanez, but Schecters freaking rule.
