Ibanez tube screamers

Taking the slow road
they're selling 4 now, but i'm interested in the ts9 v. the ts808.

besides $60 more, wonder how much the tone differs and if either is worth it or do i go looking for a vintage?
 
I loved my ts9 if that's any help. Very rich and full sounding, worked extremely well thru my old VJ.
 
they changed over the years, was your ts9 old or recent model?
 
A friend of mine has the original 808. I had the original TS9 I bought new in the early ‘80s. I would say the TS9 is a little brighter… a little more bite, but they don’t sound that much different to me otherwise. IMO, if you get an original TS9 you can get virtually all the sounds of the 808 and TS9 with a little EQ, but not the other way ‘round.

As it turned out, I sold my TS9 years ago after buying a Boss Heavy Metal Pedal, which I prefer to about anything. I also use the Rockman Model 200 Sustainor with the double IC. The vintage Ibanez boxes are nice though, and I probably should have kept it just to have around.

It all depends on what you’re doing. I only do recording these days and only DI through a Hughes and Kettner Red Box. I haven’t miked a cab for years.

thanks, i came from there, too much information. i can either just spend $99 and risk it, or drag my amp and axe down to a store and try them, but if the differences are minor...

i've also heard some clips, still not sure if i even like the sound, so i think i'll have to go to the store, i won't bring my gear the first time.

Well I have never played an 808. But I do own a TS9 and I like it going thru my Epi Valve Special for slightly crunchy rhythmbecause you still get great clarity and hear every note of a chord. By maxxing out the gain knob I get closer to smooth santana-like sustain for soloing.
But I wouldn't plug into and start chugging away with metal riffs, its not suitable for that.
I'm dying to try out a Fulltone w/boost though. It might do what the TS9 does and a bit more. They are hard to get for a bargain on ebay though.
 
i used my ts-9 with a peavey solid state combo for 20 yrs. half od on the amp and half on the tube screamer was excellent for metal. the damn thing was a real meat grinder.

but the amp itself has to have a decent overdrive.
 
Go to tubesandmore.com and check out thier Maxxon tube screamers. They claim to be the same thing and they are a lot cheaper.
 
has anyone here tried the TS7? it's ridiculously cheaper than the other models, and i've heard that i can be cheaply/easily modded to 808 specs.

Its kinda hard to imagine a tubescreamer with LESS gain or more transparency than a TS9, though thats what the other models are known for.
If my TS9 had any less gain it wouldnt be that useful to me. I have an LP style guitar (mahogany body, maple top, set neck) and I still literally max the gain to get the sustain I want, and maybe 70% to get crunchy rhythm tone (or just roll my pup's volume back)

To me its nice having a pedal that is not made for heavy metal and dialing in smooth distorted tone is quite easy. If I want something heavier I swap in another of my pedals. If I want something more mellow I roll back the gain on the TS9. If I had a TS7 or 808 and wasn't satisfied with the amount of gain.... I'm just out of luck unless I owned a TS9 as well. But that would be redundant. Don't limit yourself, spring for the real TS9, like 90 bucks on ebay? Thats still way less than a fulldrive.

i should have a new ts9 soon.

weird, all the maxons and ibanez 808, all sold out! even the modders sites are out of them

so i'll check this one out for a bit and if i hate it i'll send it in to be modded or try some others, or return it if it totally sucks, but i doubt that...

i kinda liked the clips i heard of the Rat2, also cheap.
 
my buddy's got one of the newer (it's maybe 5 years old?) TS9's and he loves it. it gives him the SRV-like tone he's looking for. personally, i find it a little thin.

instead, i far prefer my Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde. it's got the old TS808 on the left side and on the right side is essentially a ProCo RAT. Between the two, there's virtually no sound that i can't get out of that pedal.

It cost more than the TS but it is also a lot more versitile.The boost is a nice
feature to give solos that extra oomph.

Shep....what's the difference between the MOSFET version and the other full-drives?

I was at my brother-in-law's church yesterday and heard their guitarist lay down a sweet solo on his Tele....so I had to ask him what he was using....it was a fulltone full-drive. Since I didn't know that there was more than one full-drive, I didn't notice if it was the mosfet version or not. (He also had a TS, Keeley compressor & Keeley clean booster among other things in his rig)
