Ibanez Tube Screamer(s)?

i have tried a tube screamer 808 and it sounded pretty warm and thick to me.
i own a boss superoverdrive and i'm pretty happy with its slightly acid but controlled sound, but of course if what you're after is warmth maybe it's not the right one for you. that said we can't forget the sound of pedals may change quite a bit depending on the guitar and amp you use...
speaking of other overdrive/fuzz/distortion pedals I also own a fulltone soul bender which I like for its bluesy evil sound; a big muff which I love for its grunge/noise buzzing tone... and if that didn't seem enough, the one I'd really fancy owning is the beast called z-vex fuzz probe. so expensive but oh so weird and squeeky!

how do you set it?

i've noticed that the TS7, and really most tubescreamers, seem to work best with the drive turned most of the way down, and the tone/level knobs in the neighborhood of 12 o'clock, give or take a couple notches depending on what you're after

That's exactly how I use mine.I don't think you should get all your tone from the stompbox, rather use the stompbox to push the tone of the amp.

I had several of the older TS9's. Love them on the JCM800's, a couple Peavey's I have, and some older Boogies, not so much on my Rectifiers.

Other than the 808, and the TS9, i can't say I know much about every Ib tube screamer model. However, the 808, and TS9 are NOT a distortion pedal. It is an OD pedal. If you are searching for hi gain from a tube screamer, then you are barking up the wrong tree. They are called "Tube Screamer" because they over drive the tubes, which as mentioned, uses the amps sound, while a distortion pedal creates electronic distortion (transister....eeeewww:p), before the signal reaches the amp.

Getting OT, I know, but all the tube based pedals I've seen have a 12AX7 or 12AY7 or some other fullsome, high voltage tube that requires a lot of juice to get going. Are there any pedals that use subminiature tubes like the ones that mshilarious used in the MSH-4? Seems like those could get going pretty well with just a battery as the power source.

Well,...

1. I didn't call it a "tube screamer," you did.

2. Whatever this thing was, and it was an overdrive unit of some sort- it DID have a tube. Pics were quite clear, and there is no reason some would Photo Shop a pic for something the buyer would see before he bought.

3. Digitech RP-6's and -7's have a 12AX7 in them, that is used for TUBE OVERDRIVE.

So, you might want to check your facts first.

damn dude, don't get so pissy...from the way you worded the question, i thought you were saying that you saw a TS with a tube in it, which would be totally off the mark

FWIW.....If you like to play and experiment, there are a number of mod kits for the TubeScreamer and clones (most every other overdrive pedal is based around the Ibanez). This basically means that you can take most any cheap ass OD pedal and get it to sound like you want it too.

A TS-9 serviced by analog man is the best sounding thing I have ever heard when it comes to guitar OD. It was money well spent. Here is a link.

There is a guy in Vermont. You go to his store, its called MUSICIANS JUNKYARD, and its in some old worn down warehouse. (i think he did move recently though)

It looks like a regular music store, but in the back of the store he has all these older housewives soldering pedals. He builds a pedal or 2 for anolog man as well as his own... the Musicians Junkyard Screamer is his flagship unit. It is a combo between an 808 and an MXR distortion +.

this thing is the real deal.

Yeah but how much?

i build all my own pedlas for the studio and amp heads to none of the amps in the studio are higher then 5 watts all pedals are made with low noise op amps metal film resistors and vintage poly film caps for the quietest tone
