Returned from the dead
Is the Turbo Tube Screamer any better than the normal TS-9?
The guy at guitar center was trying to convince me that it's better than the ts-9 because it has more tonal options, is hand wired and has the very original TS-9 Chip in it.... Of course I would've just gone with the TS-9 if they had it in stock but they didn't so this was the closest I could get to testing one out.

Of course with tax it cost me 120$ and either way I'm taking it back... I just wanted to test it out before I actually decided to keep one and I'd rather order it off of musicians friend so I don't have to pay tax and so I can get free shipping since I'm ordering an EQ too...

I'm using the TS-9 as a tone shaping device rather than an overdrive so that said, is there any point in having the TS-9DX over the normal TS-9 and just out of curiosity what general settings (if any) could you recommend to tighten up your low end?

You do know that Guitar Center is MusiciansFriend, right? And if your state has a sales tax, internet purchases will include it?

Just curious. I don't know shit about Tube Screamers.

When I order from musicians friend I don't get charged tax. I've done it before and I'll do it again.

Hmmm. A guy I used to know went to a buy a TS9 for his bass (I still don't see how this could have anything but the smallest impact on tone) and the sales guy pushed a DX - not sure why exactly, as it was retailing for less than a regular TS9.

Tbh, it's probably just a TS9 with added functionality. If you use the TS9 as a simple boost with a slightly tweakable EQ, I guess it'll do fine. But so would an SD1. I do think that the extra control knob is complicating what is in fact a very simple circuit, and am naturally suspicious of anything labelled 'Hot' or 'Turbo'.

All the different modes seem to do is add a little more distortion and a piss ton of bass which for me completely defeats the purpose since I'm using the TS9 to tame my amps bass...

I'm gonna take this back and get a boss eq and if that can't get me to where I want I'll just go back and get the normal TS9... But I'm wondering if the EQ will be able to help me get the "mud" or "chub"(as ocnor described it) out of my sound... I'm hoping that it can while allowing me to have a little more control over exactly how much is cut out cause I feel like the TS9 is cutting too much bass out.

I guess I'll find out.

hell, telepaul showed me the SD1 as a cheaper alternative to the TS9 and i'm loving it. it's only $40 compared to the $110 or so for a TS9, and it sounds damn amazing. colors the tone exactly how i want it to, and even sounds badass on a clean channel to boost a bit

Alot of people say that a TS9 will 'tighten up the low end' of your tone. I'm not sure whether this refers to an espoused reduction in the low-end or a boost in the low end, but I havn't experienced any magical redefining of the lower-mids. That's not to say that I don't like it, I do...just not as an EQ.

On the other hand, I think the GE7 is pretty damn incredible - with a little bit of work, you can cut, boost, whatever you like. Plus, the master volume slider makes it ideal for live work.

QFT, very useful pedal IMO. Glad you're liking it.

Yeah, it's supposed to cut some of the mud out of your low end so when you "chug" the notes are more defined instead of a boomy/muddy mess. It's also supposed to have a slight mid boost but it seems to me that I could do all that with an EQ and also be able to control how much is cut and boosted.

I did some research and finally found some info on the tonal differences between the TS9DX and the TS9 and from what I've read the TS9DX does cut a little more of the low end out than the normal TS9 does so I suppose I could give that a try if the EQ doesn't work out for me but I think I might keep the eq just so I can have the option of carving more of a tone out.
