Ibanez RGT 42dx Tuning Problems

My guitar isn't tuning right - it just started doing this - I have had it maybe 6 months.

When I use the fine tuning pegs and tune it from low to high, when I go back and check the low E it's always dropped down flat again. I loosened all the tuning pegs, loosened the locking nut and tuned it with the neck tuning pegs - tightened it back down and the same thing happened.

I am thinking its either

a) I need new strings (still have the strings on it came with - used)
or
b) I need to tighten the trem springs

or both?

could old strings do this?

New strings couldn't hurt. 6 months lol? I am not familiar with the guitar or floating trems so I won't go as far as to say that it "is" your problem.

My guess is strings. I can only get about three to four weeks out of a set before I have to change them. Any longer and any guitar I've ever owned won't stay in tune.

Damn - well thats probably it I took it in to get it restrung. I would do it myself (and I will next time) but I get a free 30 day tune-up from the guitar store I bought it from and I never used it so they are doing it now - Ernie Ball Super Slinky #9's

I can't go any lighter than 10's. I'm a string breaker.

Yep - strings sounding crappy and hard to tune are usually an indicator they need to be changed. On the road changed on Sundays...lol....
Another tip - tune your bottom three strings first, then tune the top three. Rinse and repeat. As you tune strings they affect the others as you're pulling on the springs. Just be glad you have fine tuners - they are a godsend....

The new strings sound great. That really did the trick I didn't really realize I needed to change them so often - but I have 3 guitars - and I trade off - so I probably get more than 4 weeks - probably more like 12 weeks per guitar.

I like to have vacriation so I use 10's on my Les Paul, 9's on the Ibanez and 8's on my BC Bich. The LP is my favorite though

The Bich is the only one I have broken a string on - I guess I play pretty light - even though I am usually playing really pretty fast rhythm guitar - surprised I don;t break more.
