Someone bought a 32-channel TASCAM M-3500 console w/full meter bridge (but no PS) yesterday on eBay for $162... :(

...and it wasn't me!!!

I missed the auction ending by 5 minutes 'cuz I was outside doing some yard work.

Anyway, I have a 24-channel, but boy, I would have grabbed that 32 and either stored it for future use (as I keep planning to expand my studio)...or at worst, used it for parts.
Not to mention, the pick up would have been easy, as it was only about 1.5 hours drive from me just outside of NYC.

You win some...you lose some....

Hang in there. There will be another chance, maybe not right away, but Ive found if I am patient and dilegent in my searches, I usually come up with what I want, and on my terms. Case in point: last month I came up with a boxed Mackie 32.8.2 console with meter bridge, ended up hauling it home for 200 bucks. Now I have two items on my long term search, the Mackie 24 expansion module, and stereo Nagra. Keep looking!

That sucks! One time I was bidding on something on Ebay, and waited for the last 10 seconds to place my bid. As soon as I clicked "place bid" I was brought to a page saying "You are not logged in" I quickly logged in but it was too late. I missed the damn item by a couple seconds!

It's not the first time I missed/passed on a 32-channel M-3500, though for $162 this was like a total no-brainier.
The other one sold for about $700-$800, but included the PS, so it was a fully-operational board.

I already have a spare PS, so that didn't bug me, and I have a few spare channel modules and other parts.

This was just something that I've always considered doing --- moving up to a 32 channel --- but just 'cuz it's nice to have more channels and it's a bigger, more impressive looking board....though honestly, I don't have a particular need for an extra 8-channels! :)
I've been doing fine for 20 years with my 24-channel, it's just that at the time when I bought mine new, going with a 32 added a lot to the price tag, and I didn't want to spend that much, so I guess I've been carrying a bit of regret all these years. :D

Even if I had gotten this 32 on eBay...it would have been a serious decision to "upgrade" from my 24, 'cuz I would have to tear up a lot of the studio, including the way the console desktop and racks are connected...etc...etc....so it probably would have just sat in storage for awhile, as that's not a project I would have jumped into eagerly at this time.

Still...it was only $162!!!

Guess you could always just replace all of the op amps with Burbrown in the meantime Miro. ;)

Sorry you missed the auction, that's a good price IF you have a PSU for it and I do loathe snipers, but that being said...you didn't really miss anything, right? ;) ;)

If it's really burning a hole in your pocket, I'll gladly take that 162 bucks off your hands ;) ;)

Moresound does make a point...if it's lust you're after, 162 bucks buys a bunch of nice op amps (and bypass caps if necessary). Burr Brown if you prefer chocolate milk, National if a cool glass of white does it for ya...but really, what are you REALLY missing with your current setup?

Something like that happened to me. Some guy was selling NOS 1/2" Scotch 207 I can't remembr is BIN or BID at $12.99 or a pop. I got one and tried to bid onthe other two or three he had, but there was some glitch or another, some weird popup on Ebay kept popping up.... Got teh one only, coulda had three or four. Good tape, good price.... THe others didn't even sell!!! ebaymessaged the guy after the fact, but got no response.

Not really missing anything that even new op-amps/caps would give me. What I mean is, my board is still working fine, and I know of a lot of folks that have modded the 3500 boards to death with only marginal improvements, or at best some slight "changes" to what they already had.
I think you need to consider the whole enchilada if you are going to see any significant improvement, and that's what I would ultimately do...just get a much higher-end console at some point.

The main reason I was looking at that 32-channel was simply 'cuz for $162 it was a tremendous purchase, and if nothing else, just parting out the modules, faders, master section and meters would have brought in 5-10 times that, but that's something I would only have done down the road if I never decided to use it.
The only possibility that I would have actually used it would have been if I redid my studio, which I've contemplated off-on....not that there's anything wrong with the studio either, :D ...but I thought of simply changing around the layout and how I have my racks set up...and only then would I have considered using the 32-channel, had I purchased it.

Otherwise...I'm not really *uspet*... :) ...it's more how shocked I am that $162 bucks purchased that console...even without the power supply.

AFA is upgraded consoles....I keep looking, would love a Trident, and almost purchased one on a couple of occasions in the last 3-4 years. Of course, there are many other nice upscale consoles that would be a significant improvement to the 3500.
Some of the Amek stuff is sweet...and just now there a closed down studio just a few miles away from me that is selling a 56-channel DDA DMR12...but they are asking $5k...and at this time I don't need a 56-channel, 7ft long board!!!

I've got this idea, dream, plan...to expand my studio, add another two rooms to the studio proper, and then use my current all-in-one room as primarily the control room but still have space in there for tracking too. It would be just a question of changing the layout of the room. The other two rooms are adjacent/connecting...so the "plan" is actually quite workable...I just don't know if I want to go commercial at this time.
It's been an on going debate in my head for quite a few years now. It's a plan for when I retire from my day gig, as would then want to record full time, and doing commercial work would add some $$$ to the pension plan. If it could be at least somewhat profitable or at least self-sustaining and paying for new toys and what not...then my goal to retire early would be that much more attainable.

OK...there...that's the whole story. ;)

I feel for ya. I have some eBay disappointments myself in the same way... getting to an auction a few minutes late that I'd been watching for 7 or even 10 days only to miss a deal of a lifetime. On the other hand I've also been the one to get some unbelievable deals. All we can do is be happy for the guy that got the deal this time and look forward to the next one. I try to tell myself maybe the buyer that won really needed a break for a change. I have said the F-word however after the near misses, but I calm down later. Sometimes I’m even relieved because it might be something I couldn’t make up my mind whether I really needed or not. ;)
