Whasup guys. After many close calls, I'm finally going to be moving for sure. I have a list of gear and stuff that i want to get to set up my studio when we get in the house.

Stuff I Already Have:
Computer w/ m-audio 2496
Acid Pro 4, Adobe Audition, and Fl Studio 4/3.56, waves plugins
Behringer Truth Monitors
Behringer Mixer
180 gig external harddrive
Foam by mail studio foam
2 pairs of headphones
studio projects c1
nady scm 950
Korg Triton Le
Yamaha Psr 540

Stuff i want:
Adk a-51 type v($130 at pro audio toys.com)
MPC(not sure of what model i want/can afford)
M-Audio Dmp3
extra 180 gig hard drive
1 gig of ram
Aurelex Foam
fiberglass panels(for walls and basstraps)
Behringer Composer

About how much should i save up to get the stuff i want? Do yall know any places that i can catch deals on some of this equipment? I'm probably going to get the acoustic treatment first because of low funds but i plan to buy all this over time. I wish i had the money to buy all recording gear so my gear lust would be over!

Another alternative to Aralex foam (which is a bit pricy IMO) is this foam HERE . It's alot cheaper and around the same NRC ratings.

I would say save at least 3-5g's and you'll be str8... the MPC2000XL is almost $1,300, the MPC4000 is like 3g's, and the small MPC1000 is 1g.

depending how much foam you need, a whole room can bring you over a g, and same thing with fiberglass panels. your ADK is like $150, memory $100 or less, there's 300gb seagates sata hard drives for $79. a much better deal.. dmp3, $100. behringer mdx composer xl 2600, is $109. it works ok.. if I was you, I would get the a dbx compressor. I got the 2600 and it just sounds ok, I should have gotten something like the 166xl dual compressor for $249

maybe upgrading your equipment would be better than investing in acustic treatment even though its pretty tempting.

Tone, don't buy that stuff. It's cheap and doesnt work. The NRC ratings are false, copied from the auralex site and varied slightly. GIK Acoustics tested them in an acoustics lab a while back and found the NRC ratings to be much lower than claimed.

As far as cheap equipment, go here: www.fullcompass.com
They have the lowest prices on equipment I have seen. You have to call for prices though.

Ahh, sorry about that, had no idea.
Thanks for correcting me. :o
I own the stuff and it does work. I guess it's not as good as Auralex but it
definatley works well. Not sure what it's real NRC ratings are but when I walk
into my studio it is dead, no flutter, very quiet, bass traps work well too, no complaints here.

I bought my current foam from them. It's ok but i wanna know how much of a difference the aurelex will make.

I appreciate your comment and i do plan to upgrade my equipment. But, i won't be able to truly get the best sound out of my current gear unless i have a good sounding room. Acoustic treatment makes a huge difference in how your recordings sound, and how accurately you mix. After that, i'll start with my preamp. I'm not a behringer basher, but i would like to try something a little better. :D

I got some aurelex foam in my closet, and some foambymail 3" wedges on my walls, there's not a difference that I can tell though. Just make sure you don't get some egg carton ones, I have some of that, and it sucks. just make sure when it comes to room deadning or treatment, you know what your doing. and for $600 that's decent price for a used one, but I myself wouldn't risk it on ebay. I need my full warranty on my equipment that I use to make MY music :D

Now i don't know what to do. I could get a bunch of foam by mail foam for the $100 that i would pay for the little bit of aurelex foam. Is there really not much difference? You got clips of how your booth sounds with the aurelex foam? I know what mine sounded like with foam by mail and it was decent except i didn't have bass traps. I wanna make some fiberglass bass traps and put foam on the walls.

here's one that's recorded with foam by mail

here's one that's recorded with aurelex

The only thing different is that the aurelex is 2" wedges, and the foam by mail ones are 3 inch wedges.

but here's the thing, aurelex 2" ones sound the same as the foam by mail 3" ones. That means aurelex ones are better. It's just way more expensive. If you buy the foam by mail, you buy 1" bigger then the ones you buy of aurelex, and that = the same.

I got dial up so it's gonna be a minute!
What mic you usin?

dial up? my songs link's are Hi Fi, and on soundclick, i got em as they have to pay per song.

I'm using a MXL 990. Getting the perception 200 in a day though

Yea i still got dial up! I want to swith to dsl with bellsouth but imma wait until i move. The house were getting has a brick wall that is extended out for no reason. As a result, we are getting a friend to build that wall into an extra room for a studio! In the meantime, i'll be usin the closet for vocals.

What pre you usin? How do you master your beats and songs? I'm tryin to learn as much as i can man! Sorry if i'm aggravating.

You make that 990 sound good man! I like the song with the foam by mail foam better, but it has more room echo in it tho.

I put more reverb into that track, I can't wait till i get the perception 200. That's my dogg/artist Vyrous. He can rip a track up. We recorded both of them like 4 months ago in my setup. Of course I mixed it & mastered it. Man fedex ships quick. I ordered the mic monday, and it's coming in tomarrow. Tracking shows it already here.

What are your mastering techniques? I'm trying to learn mastering. Right now, i let the mix peak at -6db max so i'll have some headroom. I take the mix to adobe then do some multi-band compression. I'm stuck with the eq tho. Not sure where to go. I need a good mastering tutorial. Your stuff sounds kinda like what i'm aiming for. Tips?
