I thought it was me but something else is making me sound out of time

I am going nuts because I can't play anything in time. Disgusted and suspecting something else I decided to record my headphones into the mic I was tracking my guitar with. When I examined the waves against the overhead mic's which have a cymbol crash at the beginning the same thing was something like 2000 samples late in the newly recorded guitar track. I am recording at 44.1 so that's something like 50 ms of delay I think.

Is there something I'm missing? I am tracking into a DM24 through a MOTU 2408 mk III into Sonar 2.2.

Is the journey through all the equipment to blame? Is there a setting to get around this?

I've noticed this before but I thought it was me. Most of the tracking I do is a full live band so everything get's laid down at the same time. THis problem has crept into my work lately because I'm doing more stuff single instrument at a time.

Thanks, RD

Might be a latency issue. Are you using Input Monitoring? If so, try turning it off and see what happens.

No input monitoring here. I'm getting it from the board and I'm tracking without any effects. The trip through the DM24 is something like 1.6mS according to tascam. This is hardly enough to cause this kind of lag.

My system is a 2.53 gig p4, 1.5 gigs ram, serial ata 7200 rpm hdd for audio. IDE ata 80 gig system drive.

I guess I need to record a click generated by the pc on one track then another while the recording is playing to confirm.

I also recorded the master output of the DM24 into a stereo channel while I played with the track. It was in time whie the single guitar track I also recorded simultaneusly was out of time with the rest of the channel.

MOTU and dm24 are indicating sync with DM24 as master.

thanks, rd

Have you tried reducing your latency? Also, what sort of drivers are you using, ASIO/WDM/MME?
