Peavey ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the noise redux units for the Tascam 48.

I just got some "one pass" tape from and ebay win today and threw it on the machine to listen to it. No recording, just push up the the faders and listen for the quality and volume of noise. I did that just last night with the bulk erased tape the machine came with looking for the noisiest channel...

I hardly heard any noise. I checked to be sure the dbx was off...I turned up the the headphones WAAAY past reasonable... ah, there's the noise. Less full spectrum, much lower volume. Wow. If I'd gotten tape this clean with the machine I probably wouldn't have even thought about noise redux.

I'll have to pony up for some new tape just to do this noise comparison with it. I'm kinda blown away. I had no idea. The noise on the bulk erase tape (which has a completely unknown history) is something like 4-5 times louder than the noise on the one-pass tape.

How many passes do you get out of a tape, anyway?

At any rate- glad I have the DX-4d's anyway. I'm just blown away again: I thought it sounded good with the noisey tape... the brief experimental recordings I did today with the one-pass stuff sounds even better.

Take care,
Chris

I had been starkly warned that the worst part of my deicsion to get a tape deck was the tape hiss. I was cautioned that I would be so distracted, annoyed, and disgusted with ridiculously loud hiss and a high noise-floor that I'd be ashamed for moving forward with a purchase.

Well those lying SOBs!  :(

My B77 is running 456 (Quantegy bought new though) and no NR. Realistically, to hear the hiss I have to "make" it do it by boosting the monitor level beyond typical and even then during whisper-level input or just silence. Anything more than the quietest input and it's a non-issue.

I can't imagine how much more so on a high-end machine like a big Ampex or Studer or whatever.

I'm mostly pissed at myself for listening to those people. And the worst is when I discover that some of them have never even recorded with tape. Ughh!

Definitely pick up a fresh reel.

like fox news.

what's fox news?

Well the foxes out in the field need to know when a fire is coming by- a fox caught in a brush fire is a sad thing, indeed.

Unfortunately, the fox news network isn't very accurate, however, and (for safety, they say) loudly proclaims "FIRE!!!" every time a slight breeze comes by on a hot day.

That's why foxes are so skitish, you see.

:D

Naturally :D
Fox is a solitary creature with no tendency to form networks.
