I "think" I have everything, but ....

I'm a singer turned DJ (six years ago) who is now ready to record his own stuff.

For my DJ gear, I've got a big Beringher 2442 Mixer, Beringher exterinal sound card (also have a Maya), and a couple big amps. My DJ software is PCDJ. I also have some software called Rip, Edit, Burn which lets me record anything coming out of my mains. My PC is a good laptop with lots of RAM.

For my vocals, I use a 1" diaphram condenser mic.

My question is, how can I record my accompanient track (not karaoke) and vocal track separately so that I can tweak them - and then of course - remix together for a descent final product.

Any help would be very appreciated.

If you have a PC, you need some type of recording software. Reaper is free to download and test, and if you like it you can pay for it once you decide. I use mac, so I have no experience with Reaper, but many on this board rave about how well it works. You can input tracks separately through your mixer.

If you have a Mac, just open garage band and record tracks to it through your mixer. Then you can edit away to your hearts content.

Sorry, not familiar with Rip, Edit, and Burn. Don't know what you can do in that software.

Actually I have two descent PCs (one running XP and the other Vista).

Thank for the "Reaper" idea, I'll check into it today.

My next question is then how to record individual tracks when I'm doing vocals to music from the main mixer output. I've read a few other posts about using 1-2, 3-4 alt bus on the mixer, but I'm still confused.

I feel that if I can just get the recording down, THEN I can work about the mixdown and master after loads of practice.

That is the only advise you need.

Go download reaper from www.reaper.fm

You have everything else you need. The forums there are wicked helpful too.
